New York Comic Con often brings an interesting mix of creators. think about announcements Stan Lee and Neal Adams Working with the NHL at NYCC ’11. There’s an equally interesting mix this year. Film Score Expert bell macreesinger-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, writer pad groom and Kyle Higgins and artist Ramon K. Perez collaborated with other artists and musicians to create a graphic novel and concept album.
The album has the same name as the graphic novel, this Singularityreleased this spring, but some of the creators behind it, including McCreary, Higgins, and Groom’s promoters, were at NYCC to promote and sign a special deluxe edition released through Mondo.
I had the opportunity to sit down one-on-one with most of the team to learn how such an ambitious project came together.
Singularity is Bear McCreary’s popular pet project. It didn’t start out as a concept album or have elements of a graphic novel, but over time it grew into those things. “It started out as a stripped-down rock record. But then, I looked at it and thought I’d made a concept album,” Bell explains. But he hesitated to call it a concept album, adding, “When you hear the word concept album, there are some tracks you skip.” A concept album propelled young Bear McCreary toward a music career. “For me, it all started with Pink Floyd this wall. I saw the Alan Parker movie There Was a Baby and thought “What the fuck is this?”
As the album progressed, McCreary pitched the idea of a graphic novel to his old friend Kyle Higgins. The two had known each other for 15 years and became friends shortly after Higgins gave McCreary a copy of his student thesis film at SDCC a year later. Higgins recounts McCreary reaching out to him Singularity. “When Little Bear calls me this Singularityit’s very exciting and very easy to answer “yes”.
Next to join the lineup is comic book writer Matt Groom. Bell McCreary has one hard and fast rule about graphic novels. Bear explains, “The biggest challenge with this album was to change singers on every song. One rule I gave Matt was that I didn’t need an anthology. Matt told me the story he came up with. “It’s about a guy who keeps going. The story of being reborn into a different life in a different universe. McCreary didn’t just hand over the graphic novel, though. “We went back and forth with Bale to nail down the specifics of the script,” Matt explains. “You know how they build bridges and meet in the middle? That’s it. Mike Ri further explained: “The story is about the accumulated trauma of all these different lives. It’s deep, but spaceships and zombies are also fun. We have steampunk and fantasy.
Each song on the album features a different singer, and each chapter of the graphic novel is illustrated by a different artist. Ramon K. Perez says Kyle Higgins in deep and Jim Henson’s Dander Storyboth music-driven. Perez said Higgins told him, “We’re missing an artist who can tie everything together. Can you bring that energy to this Singularity? Perez Description Singularity “It’s an amazing metal opera.” When asked to describe how he prepared for the job Singularity, “It took me two to three months to do this,” Perez said. “Also, listen to ghost. I have a few metal playlists and am going through it. There’s also a lot of European stuff.
Matt Groom wouldn’t mind a follow-up collaboration. He said, “A sequel? I would love it. I tell people this is my favorite thing I’ve ever written. It has to have the same quality and high concept.
Rufus Wainwright may not be a singer associated with metal, but the singer-songwriter is more than happy to lend a hand to his old friend Bear McCreary. He was in a song called Type III. Wainwright describes his experience being drafted by McCreery Singularity It was like, “We come from different worlds. They’re not obviously similar, but they are. I’ve written two operas. He came in and said he wanted me to sing a heavy metal song. I had to use my operatic tendencies. We There was a meeting of certain worlds that could meet, but should meet. He went on to explain: “I think it was more of a general enthusiasm for the folding reveal that was happening. There were so many high notes and big moments that It becomes a very solemn prayer.
This is Rufus Wainwright’s first time attending a comic convention. He said this after spending some time exploring NYCC. “Wow, there’s a real passion here. People are eager to keep moving forward and make the world a better place. The things that bring us together right now are so important.
Although this NYCC is Wainwright’s first concert, the singer is very familiar with the world of comics. “I started drawing comic books. I went to art school. I was part of the magazine culture of the early ’90s. I had this person named Bella Von Hertzgel (sp?). I created a About the alter ego of a deposed Argentinian.
Wainwright described that when he performed, he would often pass out. I asked him to explain this further. He responded, “I tend to go blank when I’m up there. I’m grateful because I’m able to bring an idea to heaven, a note I want to hit, and then I pass out, and it usually would hit. I knew this note would come and I would pray. He was very committed to self-care and has maintained his voice in the group for years. “I don’t really drink. Alcohol doesn’t suit me. Giggling a lot. Everyone should do this for overall health, so I can say at least I don’t have to do this.
“Some things come from Singularity For the creator, this is quite surreal. Mat Broom recalled: “I woke up and Slash retweeted my Instagram and I was like, how was my life this morning?”
