Brian Lee O’Malley Still a legend in the comics industry. For those who don’t know, O’Malley created Scott Pilgrim vs The World, What he didn’t know at the time was that the book would later be adapted into a popular movie, animated show, and multiple book series. At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, fans celebrated their scott pilgrim It was a pleasure to join him and hear O’Malley’s thoughts on the panel “Scott Pilgrim’s 20 Years with Brian Lee O’Malley.”
The panel began as O’Malley recalled his first comic convention and how he was supposed to submit comics for printing, but he didn’t do so in time. This resulted in him having nothing to show at the convention, which made both him and the audience laugh. He then talks about how he started making comics and how it eventually led to scott pilgrim Resurrected.
“I knew I wanted to make comics,” O’Malley said in response to the host’s question. When O’Malley tried to be serious, he did lost at sea, his friends said it was a very touching comic. So O’Malley wanted to make a different kind of comic. One that will make people laugh…
That comic will eventually become scott pilgrim.
O’Malley went on to explain that he incorporated all of his experiences into the comic, which resulted in “a beautiful thing.” Much of his inspiration and creativity came from the comics craze of the time. He then went on to explain that Scott was influenced by shonen comics.
“A bit goofy and inconsistent,” O’Malley said of Scott’s overall personality.
Then the host pointed out scott pilgrim Inspired by an indie band who had a song of the same name. O’Malley agreed, then further explained that he chose that specific name because he loved the band and the song. Additionally, he told the audience that he was going to name lost at sea at first scott pilgrim, But it didn’t fit, so he wanted to save it for later.
O’Malley then answered questions about his musical background. Fans learned about his time in the band and how music became a part of his family. This explains why the series involves a lot of music.
Another topic the host asked O’Malley was how he created such dynamic movement in the character despite the fact that the drawing had no actual movement at all. His answer was to simply draw the animated character’s face or movements, just like the character in the comics. He was later asked which character he most related to. In response, O’Malley replied:
“I feel like I’m all of them.”
This panel wouldn’t be complete without talking about the popular character Ramona Flowers. The question is how Ramona was conceptualized. O’Malley responded, “Girls are a mystery to me.” He added that when he wrote about her, he was trying to understand women. He projects himself into her character because he doesn’t know much about women.
This was important because the character’s fashion was important to O’Malley. When he writes or draws characters, he wants them to feel special about their identity. For example, tThese seven evil exes have interesting origins. When he designed these charactersBeyond that, he has to introduce them very quickly, early in the story.
O’Malley wanted to make a movie based on Scott Pilgrim’s work, which is how the Seven Evil Exes were created before the entire series was released. In fact, O’Malley compares the main evil ex Gideon to a rude guy he met in a bar. Making the audience laugh.
The conversation then turned to how Scott Pilgrim slowly changed his art style from the beginning to the end of the series. O’Malley believes this happens because every time he paints, the painting improves at the same time. Not because he wanted to change his artistic style.
Edgar WrightThe director of the blockbuster movie adaptation was already invested in the series when O’Malley gave him the first volume. shaun of the dead. O’Malley saw the film before anyone else. As he watched the film, he realized that Wright was the real deal and that he could trust him to pull this off. Granted, Wright tried to stay as true to the source material as possible during the creation of the film.
It’s here that fans learned O’Malley’s thoughts on the animated series. The main reason for making this animated series is that O’Malley is different now than he was 20 years ago, and older. He admitted that he wanted to jump off a cliff and take risks in animation.
“I wanted to make something that made me feel alive,” O’Malley said. He admitted that he had no intention of retelling the story and that “Scott Pilgrim is not a caricature.” So he thought it would be more fun to do it a different way.
when the group discussion ends and Q and A and his fans, O’Malley told his fans that he always wanted to create a community… and he did it! Through the community he has built, he is able to celebrate Scott Pilgrim’s 20th anniversary at SDCC with his fans.
