Following an order from a Supreme Court judge, X is currently banned in Brazil, where users appear to be turning to alternative social network Bluesky in droves.
“Brazil, your Bluesky activity is at an all-time high!” the official Bluesky account said in the post.
“There will almost certainly be some outages and performance issues,” said Bluesky developer Paul Frazee. “We’ve never seen traffic like this. Stick with us!
The Bluesky app looks and functions a lot like X, but it is a decentralized social media platform built on the AT protocol (also developed by Bluesky). In a post at 5:12 p.m. ET, Frazee said Bluesky reached a “new milestone” by processing 1,000 events per second on its “relay,” which essentially serves as the platform’s data conveyor pipeline.
Mastodon (another decentralized platform) and Meta (the company that runs Threads and has connections to the Federated Universe) did not immediately respond to requests for comment on whether they were seeing an increase in usage.
