Remember a week ago when I posted a story about the Borderlands movie coming out at the end of this month? Well, my fellow Vault Hunters, it’s true: The Borderlands movie will officially be available to rent on August 30th on Amazon prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and more.
It’s been an incredibly quick turnaround for the film, since it just premiered in theaters three weeks ago, but it crashed and burned even more than Concord’s current management. Okay, I admit it was a bit of a mean joke, but it’s true.
The Borderlands movie is so bad that it had a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes in its first week. Now it has managed to push its own gains up to a whopping 10%. Due to a lack of public interest in the film, the film grossed a measly $16.5 million worldwide during its opening weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the total box office has now reached $24,259,061. This involves the performance of “Tomb Raider” and “Mortal Kombat” in their opening weekends.
Keep in mind that the film had a production budget of about $115 million, with another $30 million or so in marketing expenses. According to Lionsgate, approximately 60% of its production costs, approximately $69 million, were covered by international pre-sales. With that in mind, a quick math suggests the film has lost about $51 million to date.
By moving it to streaming so quickly, Lionsgate is presumably hoping to make more money from the film. Plus, movie theaters barely show it now. There are three movie theaters near me, but none of them show the movie.
Unfortunately, if you want to buy the movie, it’ll cost you $24.99, or rent it for $19.99. I’ll admit I’m morbidly curious, but there’s no way I’d spend that kind of money to see it, especially with so many great games coming out.
If there’s one good thing to come out of this whole thing, it’s that Borderlands 4 was officially released just a few days ago. I’m sure they originally wanted to make their debut in the context of a very successful and beloved film, but we can’t always get what we want, can we?
