Here’s how DC describes the new feature: black lightning series:
Black Lightning is back, and this time, it’s a family affair! Jefferson Pierce leads the Justice League’s new metahuman outreach program, helping those with superpowers before they cause harm to themselves or others – but when his own daughter Anissa Pierce turns to him for help, Everything has changed. As Thunder’s dangerous new powers and a new Master of Disaster jeopardize the coexistence between humans and Metas, Black Lightning is on the front lines of the culture war brewing on the outskirts of Metropolis!
black lightning is the latest DC work from Brandon Thomas and Fico Ocasio. Thomas had previously written the character in an “Outlander” story Batman: Urban Legendand other titles including black manta ray, Neptuneand Hardware: Season 1. Fico Ossio’s previous work in DC includes Mister Miracle: Source of Freedomthe series marks the first time he’s tackled Black Lightning, and he’s putting his own visual stamp on the character.
“We’re working on this,” Ocasio told beat“I had the great opportunity to redesign this suit, looking for Black Lightning, Thunder, and Lightning! I had a great time working on this and hope the fans enjoy our take on these characters. We brought back some of Black Lightning’s A classic design, but giving Thunder and Lightning more personality and uniqueness. You’ll see traces of Jefferson’s original costume, but modern and more like armor with sharp edges. This is Black Lightning we’re talking about!
Thomas elaborated on where the series finds Black Lightning and his family in the opening scene, and described how the series will spin off from DC’s ongoing crossover event. “After Absolute Power, everything changed for Jefferson Pierce and his family,” he said. “He plays a key frontline role in the newly reborn Justice League Unlimited and also creates a crisis response team to confront and neutralize emerging superhuman powers before they pose a threat to themselves and others.”
As for the series’ setting, Ocasio expressed his enthusiasm for breathing new life into familiar settings. “Building this world is exciting,” he said. “Metropolitan’s suicide ghetto (now Southside Heights) was a hotspot of activity as gangster forces were infecting residents at an increasing rate.”
“This story is very personal to Jefferson,” Thomas added, “because he did it with the help of his youngest daughter, Jennifer, and effectively establishes his role as superhero and educator. Characters combine. His eldest daughter, Anissa, plays a key role in the series, as her powers change after “Absolutely Powerful” and she desperately needs her father’s help as the Pierce family struggles to hold things together. Together, a mysterious rival consolidates power and legitimacy, weaponizing public sentiment, declaring that “Waller is right‘Fear these gods who are mad with power.
