For triple-A game series, the time between installments is getting longer and longer. dragon age Often cited as a key example of this as we approach a full decade gap Dragon Age: Inquisition and October Dragon Age: Veiled Guard. Whether it’s completely worth the wait will be up to players come October 31st, but after playing it at a recent event, I can say Veil Guard It feels so well put together, like it’s the best version of itself.
accompanied by play Veil Guardio9 participated in a roundtable held at the event with several BioWare staff members, including game director Corinne Buche and producer Jen Cheverie. If you’re worried about spoilers, don’t be – these questions are about continuing Inquisition Lingering clues, connections dragon age Own a BioWare franchise mass effect, and other topics that won’t reveal anything about the new version.
Justin Carter, io9: Solas will always be a part of it Veil Guardbut when did you decide to introduce a new hero/organization instead of continuing the Inquisitor v. Solas thread?
Corrinne Busche, Game Director: Fundamentally, it depends on the nature of being a human being dragon age game. Each adventure features a different protagonist, a series of locations, but is never a direct sequel or continuation. That’s really the core of the mystery of the series, and of course we have unresolved loose ends and mysteries throughout the series. Inquisition Ultimately, there’s an unresolved danger looming and we know we all need to address it, and it will be a big part of the next game. But it’s still very important to us to continue the main thread of the series with new characters and parts of the world taking center stage.
io9: Regarding the new hero Rook, how do you think they are different from the heroes in previous games? Do you wish they were more like a specific protagonist, like Hawke from “Hawk”? DA2 Or the Inquisitor?
Only CHewery, producer: We really want to engage with Rook, with the goal of allowing players to create the Rook they want to be and see. When developing the character creator, we put a lot of thought into hair styles, skin tones, everything. Hope it brings this feeling [that] Creating a Rook feels very personal, and you can feel more connected to the companions and characters you get to know and the problems you solve throughout Thedas.
bush: I’ve always been a fan of these games and their protagonists – Ferelden’s hero Hawk, my dear Inquisitor, who I still love. One of the most interesting challenges is having one of the previous leads, such as the Inquisitor, meet Rook. Both of them play unique and important roles in their own journeys and that of Thedas. So when they and Rook meet, it’s almost like two giants meeting; those interactions are so complex and will be full of memories and feelings for longtime fans.
io9: Most of the companions are completely new to the game. But some, like Neff and Loukanis, had been seen or mentioned in EU materials before. Besides them being in Tevinter, what made you want to bring them into the game? Instead, what was your process for deciding to fill the companion spot with a character from the previous game, such as Hardin?
bush: It’s a mixture of a few things. Twente is located in northern Thedas and is filled with all-new locations we mentioned earlier. Fans wanted to see more of the area but they had never been there during previous games. We knew we wanted to do right by them, and we also knew we needed companions representing these parts of the world, as well as people with ties to these new and returning factions.
Cheveri: When I was a QA Analyst trial, Scout Harding is a regular for us. Seeing how players reacted to her, we knew we had to bring her back to delve more into her story and let players develop that relationship with her. It’s an exciting endeavor that allows players to learn more about her and learn more about dwarven history in the process.
bush: Hardin was an early companion choice we made. Seeing players fall in love with Harding all over again Inquisition To be honest, I was a little surprised. But we were inspired, so it felt like a natural extension to have her return as a full-fledged companion who also has ties to the Inquisition.
Other times, we know what characters we need for the story and we spend a lot of time going through a backlog of characters and their histories to find the ones that are best for the moment. Sometimes we try out different roles and find ones that better suit specific needs. As for those returning characters, we can’t include everyone from the previous games, but I think long-time fans will be pleased with the cameos sprinkled throughout Veil Guard.
io9: No new games since then trial, But you’ve filled that gap with European content like short stories, TV series, and more.
Cheveri: as a dragon age Fans, these games are the reason I wanted to work at BioWare in the first place, so it’s exciting to be back in that world again. I love that we can continue telling the stories of characters that fans know and love in Thedas, and start new stories with characters introduced through other media.
bush: Even if you are a diehard Fans, you probably haven’t played in 10 years trial, And there is a lot of knowledge to keep in your head. For lost players or new players, we make sure Veil Guard was would be a good entry point: In the first few hours, we’re very careful to focus on core concepts like who Solas is, your next move, and your motivation to keep going.
For fans of the lore, around every corner you’ll find new information about these long-standing mysteries. As you get deeper into the game, many long-standing theories will get some resolution. In terms of expanded media, I love that we’re able to feature characters from comics or books that haven’t been in the game yet. my first priority is Conflict with Arilyn [from Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights]as well as fan-favorite character Maevaris Tilani. There are other surprises as well, and I can’t wait for players to experience them.
io9: dragon age and mass effect Now they have borrowed each other’s gaming DNA Veil Guard and andromeda, respectively. Did you ever worry that you were taking too much from the franchise and losing some? and’s (admittedly unstable) identity?
bush: We look at it from the perspective of, “Does this fit the story? How does it help us?” We look back across the entire catalog of games to see where we’ve had similar success, or “What makes sense for a story like this, an environment, and a development team like this?” Each one. dragon age Games have reinvented themselves in some ways, from combat to the way we approach the world. This is the biggest challenge and, to me, the most interesting opportunity because it allows us to look back at fan-favorite features from all previous games and see if they make sense moving forward.
Quickly swap weapons during combat origin. If I consider the pacing of the combat, the depth of the companions, and their character arcs, I see a lot dragon age 2. You can also see many from Inquisition there too – but Veil Guard Still its own entity and experience. We hope it all comes together to honor our past and move the series forward into the next Thedas adventure.
Cheveri: Some of the people on this team have been at BioWare for a long time, even going back in time origin. what is an idea dragon age The production of the game is very powerful and requires the joint efforts of many teams. When we play games, people give feedback and provide their insights into things. For us, the magic moment is when you sit down and play something you made and you say, “This feels like dragon age, That’s it.
Dragon Age: Veiled Wardens It will be released on October 31st for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
