The Blockchain Gaming Alliance (BGA) has released its annual report, highlighting that entry challenges to blockchain games have significantly reduced and traditional game developers are playing an increasing role in shaping the industry.
The onboarding friction that has long plagued players has been significantly reduced, while new design methods and emerging technologies signal a shift in the direction of the industry. However, the report also highlights the ongoing struggle with public perception, with most programs still struggling to establish credibility.
The BGA’s findings provide an overview of an industry that is gearing up for further growth in 2025, moving towards greater accessibility and functionality.
Improved accessibility, better user experience
BGA’s 2024 State of the Industry Report shows a significant reduction in friction associated with blockchain gaming. In 2023, 79.5% of developers said onboarding issues were a significant challenge, but by 2024, this number had dropped to 53.9%. This improvement is due to advancements in user experience (UX), with developers focusing on making the interface more intuitive and streamlined.
These changes help address key barriers that have historically limited adoption, allowing more players to access blockchain-based games without technical barriers. By bringing user experience standards closer to those of traditional games, developers are improving accessibility for a wider audience.
Despite advances in technology and design, public perception remains a significant obstacle. According to the report, 66% of blockchain gaming projects are still combating negative associations, such as links to fraud and speculation. This perception continues to hinder the industry’s ability to attract mainstream players and build trust.
In addition to addressing these credibility issues, the report also points to a shift in game design trends. The early “play and earn” model, which was criticized for being an unsustainable economic system, is being replaced by an approach that prioritizes activity-driven and performance-based rewards. Developers are moving away from excessive financial elements, such as token economics and NFT markets, in favor of designs that emphasize gameplay while carefully using blockchain capabilities.
Better blockchain games in 2025
The report introduces two noteworthy concepts: Fully On-Chain Gaming (FOCG) and Autonomous World (AW). These models represent the evolution of blockchain integration, with core game elements such as rules, assets, and in-game economies existing entirely on blockchain infrastructure. This approach decentralizes control and allows the game to evolve based on input from the community.
Additionally, BGA highlights how these technologies can enhance game dynamics, enabling more adaptive and player-responsive systems. The integration of artificial intelligence is considered a complementary development to further support these on-chain systems.
As traditional gaming companies enter the space and new technologies such as fully on-chain gaming develop, the industry is refining its gameplay and integration methods.
