“Why don’t they sell comics at Walmart? This will save comics. It’s a topic you hear all the time in the comics hotspot league. Now, Atlas Comics is coming back from the dead publisher’s grave to look at this See if that’s true, or at least see if collectibles based on the long-gone series will be available at the retail giant.
atlas renaissance is produced by Steven Paul of SP Media Group. Paul has produced the Ghost Rider movies, Ghost in the Shell, and many B-movies. He joins a rogues gallery that includes Scott CarrollPresident of SP Media Group/Atlas Comics; Jason Goodmanpublisher, grandson of Atlas founder Martin Goodmanand Jeff Rowanformer editor-in-chief of Atlas/Seaboard and author of the best-selling Tom Clancy’s Action Center novels.
It’s also backed by an exclusive partnership with Walmart to distribute merchandise, including a line of collectible action figures with Mego Toys, a line of apparel with Mad Engine (well, no mention of selling comics.) Of course, there’s also a live-action movie in the works with Paramount Pictures at SP Media headquarters.
The line will debut at NYCC with a splash: Walmart sponsors a 1,200-square-foot booth (2843) featuring collectibles and signatures from Mego Toys presidents Rovin and Goodman Marty Abramscomic legend Larry Hamaand assistant editor and writer at Atlas/Seaboard Rick Meyers. In attendance: Oscar nominees Jon Voight, From what we know, he’s a big fan of Atlas. (Also a fan Other more controversial matters.)
Perhaps most strikingly, however, Atlas and Walmart are sponsoring free Wi-Fi at the Javits Center: I know because I saw the sign! For this, we thank them.
But what do fans of Voight and all of them really like? Well, we’ll leave the long history lessons to the old-timers, but Atlas/Seaboard is a company founded by the founders of Marvel Martin Goodman After he left Marvel. It flourished in the 1970s, if you can call it that. even Wikipedia page “Atlas/Seaboard” reads like an excerpt from Alex Segura’s “Secret Identity.” Atlas was the original name of a company that bridged the gap between Timely Comics and Marvel Comics, both of which were founded by Goodman. Atlas/Seaboard refers to the 1970s revival that hired Stan Lee’s brother Larry Deere to fill the role of Stan Lee. The company eventually collapsed due to poor circulation (a common problem with newsstand comics in the 1970s) and high page rates paid to contributors such as Neal Adams and Wally Wood. And the output is weak: There are a total of 23 comics and 5 comic magazines, none of which exceeds four issues.
An obscure comics publisher remembered primarily by comics history buffs? Yes. However, the watchword for 2024 is that no intellectual property rights should go unexploited, and we have done just that. Let’s take a look at the press release:
“Walmart is excited to further enhance the collectibles experience in stores and online, connecting the comics community with exclusive merchandise inspired by dynamic Atlas character designs that fans will fall in love with all over again,” said Frank Barbieri, vice president of content and digital. “At Walmart.”
“Atlas/Seaboard has a wealth of fascinating characters and a deep history in the comic book world that we’re excited to resurface,” Paul said. “Having the opportunity to carry on Martin Goodman’s legacy and share that experience at New York Comic Con is an honor for all of us as we begin to breathe new life into our creations for modern audiences.”
The relaunch will feature Devilina, “one of Atlas/Seaboard’s most popular characters.” As you might have guessed from the name, she has a demonic origin: Satan’s sister, who must fight her demonic powers and banish her brother to Hell. A “Devilina” movie is in the works.
Other games set to be relaunched: Phoenix, grim ghostand Dragon Hand. And hopes are high.
“The dynamic characters and world-building behind Atlas/Seaboard harken back to the golden age of comics and were crafted by some of the greatest creators of all time,” said Goodman. “Our goal is to honor their legacy and my grandfather’s vision of building a powerful source of content and innovation.”
“As an editor at a major comics publisher, it’s safe to say that it’s been an absolute honor and exciting moment to reintroduce Atlas/Seaboard to the world and share this moment with fans at Comic-Con,” Rowan added . “The future possibilities for Atlas/Seaboard are exciting and I will be very proud to see it flourish in the coming years.”
Turn on the boom: Voight will be in Atlas/Seaboard booth Friday and Saturday from 12:30 noon to 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Saturday will be Judge a costume contest to choose the best Devlina. winner gets 4 limited edition Mego Toys action figures. We will also welcome another IP-based comic company.
