September is traditionally a time when the box office cools down after the release of summer blockbusters. But if early news about Beetlejuice is any indication, the long-awaited sequel will buck the trend and hit theaters in the summer.
The sequel to the 1988 film “Beetlejuice” is expected to open to $80 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. If the film succeeds in achieving this goal, it will become one of the highest-grossing September debuts ever. Still, it’s worth noting that Warner Bros. is more conservative about the film’s prospects. The studio believes the total will be between $65 million and $75 million, which is still a big start.
Regardless of the final total, these predictions suggest that now is the perfect time for director Tim Burton to return 36 years later, along with original cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. “Burton Wednesday” producers Alfred Gough and Mike Miller co-wrote the script, while “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega stars as Astrid Dietz. She is the daughter of Lydia Dietz of Ryder Theater Company.
The rest of the cast includes Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, Burn Gorman, Danny DeVito, Arthur Conti and Felipe Cates. Warner Bros. Pictures will release “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” on September 6. In keeping with recent movie tradition, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will also feature three different popcorn buckets.
