Director Tim Burton and Warner Bros.’ Highly Anticipated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice The film is expected to gross as much as $80 million at the North American box office when it opens on September 6, according to sources familiar with data from leading research firm NRG.
Warner was more conservative, recommending an investment of $65 million to $75 million, given that tracking has often skewed recently, either too low or too high.
Either way, this fantasy horror comedy is shaping up to be one of the hottest September premieres ever, not adjusting for inflation. Topping the list is 2017’s it ($123 million) and 2019 it chapter two ($91.1 million), both from New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($75.4 million), a 2021 pandemic release, and New Line’s 2018 feature nun ($53.8 million).
The follow-up to Burton’s 1988 film Beetlejuice The filmmakers reunited with Michael Keaton in the eponymous role. Other returning cast members include Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. New cast members include Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti and Willem Dafoe.
The film’s story follows Lydia Dietz (Ryder) and her family as they return home after a tragedy and then deal with the consequences when her daughter Astrid (Ortega) opens a door to the afterlife story. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’The trailer, which debuted in March, features Keaton declaring to a surprised Ryder: “The juice is gone.”
Burton directed the sequel based on the script Wednesday Showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Miller, along with Seth Grahame-Smith, contributed to the film’s story.
The 1988 film became a cult classic, grossing $74 million at the box office, or more than $195 after adjusting for inflation.
