In today’s rapidly changing comics industry, there are two universal truths. First of all Dog man It is the definition of our era. The second is that more people are reading comics and web images (also known as vertical scroll comics) than ever before. So we continue our weird adventure of beats at Comics Beat. Every week, we have three writers recommending some of our favorite books and series from Japan, Korea and elsewhere. This week we have fashion, Fudanshi and of course fish.
On and off: Work and life imbalance
Writer/Artist: Kanazawa shinnosuke
Publisher: Square Enix (Print with numbers and comics!)
He is the beloved prince of the office. She is a thorny and depressed person who tends to stay away. When the clock lights up at midnight and the carriage turns into pumpkins, and as she decorates the spikes, chains and metal strips, he turns into Lolita, becoming punk.
Everyone has a side that tends to not show at work. But Amata and Hanku are interested in fashion subcultures, which turn them into new friends, Kanade and Aki, respectively. One day, Aki’s metal spike accidentally tore Kanade’s Puff-Sleeve dress. They exchanged contact information so that AKI could repay the damage they caused. Thus, friendship blooms between these unsuspecting colleagues, who long for the opposite style but have the same passion.
I found it On and off: Work and life imbalance About two years ago, some comics recommended reels. I remember sighing because I was interested in the series, but who knows when (or whether) will be licensed in English. So imagine the excitement of comics! Obtained a year later!
Amata and Hanku as Kanade and Aki both love Lolita and punk culture. It’s especially tricky for Amane to be a man wearing wrinkled, well-crafted clothes and wearing long, flowing wigs. He was very careful not to let his secret slip. Shortly after meeting Hanku (Aki), he smelled Aki, which was too familiar to him. Hanku, on the other hand, loves cute things as Aki, and Kanade immediately catches her attention.
Both love the style of fashion that stands out and it’s great to read that they find someone who shares their dedication. Hanku, for example, knows very well how expensive Lolita-style dresses are, and Kanade has an emotional attachment to the dress, which further confuses people. She knew it was more than just a dress.
Of course, a subtle queer undercurrent is accompanied by Turn on and close. I thank the translator for the care (he did not attribute it to the comics, unfortunately!), when the two were dressed in kanade and aki or distinguished from gender/gender when necessary to keep the pronoun neutral.
Turn on and close Serialize in Gangan Pixiv, a collaboration between Square Enix and Pixiv, an online community of Japanese artists. Other works of this magazine that readers are familiar with Cherry Magic! Can thirty years of virginity make you a wizard?,,,,, Mr. Villain takes leaveand A man and his cat To name just a few. As you can see, Gangan Pixiv isn’t just focusing on a specific type of type or population. So, I hope the series doesn’t necessarily turn into a romance between Amata and Hanku. It’s not me who objected to it! I really like their current dynamics and hope to read more of the shared excitement for their hobbies that mean a lot to them. Highly recommended! – Merve Giray
The resident downstairs is Mr. Fudanxi
Writer/Artist: kuroiwa Chihaya
Publisher: Comic Planet
The resident downstairs is Mr. Fudanxi When payer Sokabe deliberately chose to stay away from the workplace salary, a wrong comedy was released because he had feelings for his downstairs neighbor Motoi. Motoi is essentially a private one until fate intervenes. When the thief stole Sokabe’s property, he found himself locked in the apartment and needed additional keys. Motoi stepped in to help, giving Sokabe an unexpected opportunity to learn more about him.
Sokabe soon discovers that his obsession is a huge BL fan. But an interesting misunderstanding emerges when Motoi mistakenly assumes that he shares the same passion. Now, Sokabe must stick to his behavior as a fellow Fudanshi, while working to cover up his true feelings.
The resident downstairs is Mr. Fudanxi This is a series that many BL fans (both Fujoshi and Fudanshi can) have to do with. I’m not in a place where I can talk about BL with my friends in public. Or almost everything that isn’t online. I almost envy Motoi’s fanatical tendencies and his unabashed, enthusiastic discussion of BL. What comes out of his mouth is something I will never want to talk about, even with trusted friends online without self-comfort.
Humor is one of the strongest points of the series. Just as poor Sokabe thought he had found another gay man like him, he realized his downstairs neighbor was the smartest thing for the second time: fudanshi. Motoi collects BL materials, which also have disadvantages. Sokabe tried his best to pretend he was a BL connoisseur, but he was terrible about it.
One of the advantages of this four-volume comic series is that the characters are quite realistic. For example, Furuichi is Fudanshi’s companion and becomes friends with Motoi. When he discovers Motoi and Sokabe’s relationship, he becomes hostile immediately, because when he likes gay couples, he only likes them in 2D. It’s not uncommon for BL fans to enjoy gay novels, but it’s immediately clear the line when it comes to real-life gay couples. Although Furuichi does redeem herself, I thank the artist for adding this character to the story.
This relaxed series combines humor, romance and cute misunderstandings, perfect for BL fans looking for fun and wholesome readings. – Hillary Liang
Go to the sea
Writer/Artist: Mukoubi AOI
translate: Zhuchka
Lettering: Tim Sun
Editing and design: remember
Publisher: Glacier Bay Books
Go to the sea Start with the story of the child. One day, a young girl heard that dolphins had appeared in the nearby Tama River. When she found him, scar and floated in the water, she was surprised to find that she could understand its language. The Dolphin says she is like him – the offspring of Triton. At first, the girl didn’t believe him. But when she finds a sword in the closet, made of mysterious Orichalcum metal, she hops on the dolphin’s back and begins a long journey.
Go to the sea It reads like a faded dream. artist Mukoubi AOI Render the environment by strokes, rather than relying too much on photo references. His ocean is a mess of white short pens, or an infinitely black graffiti white pen. His human characters are simply drawn, lacking students, often wearing simple robes or dresses rather than detailed costumes. Mukoubi was originally distributed by the series through the Independent Comic Festival Comiket, which lacks Polish language, which is subjective.
However, I think the work is better for that. Go to the seaThe empty space and the lack of details leave more imagination. What is the difference between the descendants of Triton and Poseidon, and why are they in the war? Why is Orichalcum Metal so dangerous? When Luca died (spoiler!), another dolphin said they were Luca as well, what does that mean?
There are few answers to reassure. Go to the sea A cruel side can be seen in Chapter 1, but it only becomes more common as it continues. Imagine if you merge Daisuke IgarashiThe dangers to environmentalism skilled You will have a rough idea of Mukoubi’s abilities. This is also a long book with more than 400 pages. The roller coaster started to descend before the midway point and extended the distance.
If that makes you anxious, it may not be your comic. On the other hand, if you want to read a comic that brings a new life and a fresh personality into the classic thought, I think Go to the sea Suitable for the bill. It’s an independent but undisputed epic story that can match an artist’s uncompromising vision. It’s exactly what you hope to get from the Glacier Bay book. – Adam Westcott
