Bookstore chain Barnes & Noble announced on X (formerly twitter) founder Leonard Riggio died on Tuesday. He is 83 years old.
Riggio opened the Student Book Exchange in 1965, then purchased the Barnes & Noble bookstore in 1971 and used the name for his own company.
The chain has expanded its book selection to include comics, graphic novels and hobby games as it battles competition from rivals. Amazon In 1995, Barnes & Noble began selling online. He has served as CEO several times throughout the company’s history.
He founded a video game sales company in the late 1990s, which later became GameStop after a series of mergers and leadership changes.
In 1985, Riggio also became chairman of the board of directors of MBS Textbook Exchange, a wholesaler of college textbooks.
