You mean to tell me PlayStation could keep making games like this instead of 9,000 realistic sad dad simulators?
astronomy robotIt’s the third platformer to star Sony’s new unofficial robot mascot, but somehow it’s the first regular full-priced non-VR game, compared to most of PlayStation’s offerings over the past decade. It’s a breath of fresh air. This is not a reputable TV knockoff Marsor the misery of world-weary fringe lords, e.g. the last of usor a bloated open world mess like this horizon.
Instead, this is a colorful, whimsical, mechanically tight, and overall enjoyable 3D platformer that’s also chock-full of references to PlayStation history. although astronomy robotThe reverence for the PlayStation brand can feel forced at times, and may not hold up outside of this game, but finishing it in 10 hours or so is a blast that I think any PS5 owner A must-play.
astronomy robot premise
What’s up, Ricky? Are you OK?

astronomy robotComing from the developers of Team Asobi, it’s not actually a game about plot. A PS5-shaped mothership full of little robots has run into some trouble in outer space – and it’s up to a heroic Astro robot to rebuild the mothership and save all the robots.
Although the narrative doesn’t really play a role in promoting astronomy robotand it really feeds into the game’s main aesthetic gimmick: constant PlayStation references. You’ll need to collect hundreds of stranded robots throughout the game’s levels to complete the game, many of which are dressed like classic PlayStation characters, which are carried over from similar ideas. Astro’s Playroom.
As you collect reference bots, they’ll return to your hub world and hang out, making little animations related to whatever game they came from. Very cute! I feel very happy to see Kazuma Kiryu yakuza and teddy from Persona 4 There.
However, turning references into collections necessary for progress does drive home the point: this is astronomy robot. While it’s an excellent 3D platformer with beautiful visuals and catchy music (which we’ll get to in a moment), astronomy robot is a game about enjoying all things PlayStation. Sometimes it can feel like an incomplete or flawed brand history.
For example, there are a few hints that I’m either not associated with PlayStation at all, or would be better left in the dustbin of history. I also own at least one major franchise extremely Working with PlayStation who have no representation at all, for boring entitlement reasons.
Thankfully, this isn’t the norm, but a handful of references also feel like Sony mandates. I know Detroit: Become Human is a PlayStation exclusive, but we can pretend it’s not. It’ll be fine.
astronomy robotDespite occasional fluctuations and inconsistencies, its reference quality is generally positive. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation, and if Sony itself as a wider corporate entity isn’t going to celebrate that legacy well, I’m glad this game at least does that.
astronomy robot Mechanics

If you have played Astro’s Playroom (Anyone with a PS5 should do this since it’s free) You know the deal here. astronomy robot It is a 3D platform game with simple and direct mechanics. The action is very compact and the mechanics overall give people a powerful and refreshing feeling. You can run, jump, do some hovering in mid-air, punch enemies, and that’s about it. What else do you need?
Well, there is one small More. Many levels revolve around a series of wearable devices that give Astro unique abilities. One of them allowed him to absorb water and grow huge, while the other gave him a pair of stretchy, stretchable boxing gloves. These are much more interesting than vehicles that absorb so much energy Astro’s Playroom While running, some of these are motion controlled and thankfully you can turn them off.
basic mechanics principles astronomy robot been so thoroughly game room To me, the overall design structure is more compelling than the immediate action. This is the most super mario galaxy-Ass play that isn’t actually super mario galaxy. Aside from the fact that the levels are actually spread out over small solar systems, it also permeates the way the levels are designed.
More like the snoring god. Just kidding, these games are pretty good.

most astronomy robot Spend your time moving linearly from one floating platform island to the next. Each mission will have some small challenges to complete, and then you’ll move on to the next mission, having fun along the way. All of this is so tightly paced it’s amazing. astronomy robot There is little room for boredom at any point along the way. astronomy robot is a constant blast of pleasurable brain chemicals.
Of particular note are some of the larger levels that are themed to specific PlayStation games, giving Astro special outfits and unique abilities from said games. There’s so little of it, and too much lifted from the PS4 era, but one of them made me laugh so hard that I was willing to forgive the transgression.
It almost feels easy to say “well, they made a longer version of this great packaged game, so automatically it’s great”. But that’s pretty much what happened! That said, I’m happy astronomy robot It’s that brief. Achieving 100% completion in a weekend is refreshing compared to the endless stream of live forever games and 100-hour RPGs flooding the market in 2024.

There must be a casino level in your platform game.

The Asobi team’s penchant for colorful whimsy is reflected in astronomy robotone of the prettiest games on PS5. It has a relatively simple art style, but draws many inspirations; some levels look directly like mariowhile the robot animals you fight are reminiscent of the classic Sonic. But, at least to me, it never felt like I was being blackmailed. I think this game was made by people with taste.
astronomy robot Visually gorgeous, but also completely readable, unlike many modern games that sacrifice legibility for visual density. This is exactly what a modern 3D platformer should be.
astronomy robot music and audio
astronomy robotThe music was composed by Kenneth CM Young, who also produced previous Astro games for Team Asobi. In short, every tune is great to hum and fits almost perfectly into whatever scene it’s written for. I particularly appreciate the constant use of a vocoder to produce robotic-like sounds.
The themed levels mentioned above also include fun remixes of the songs from the game that the levels are based on. Sorry to spoil one (if you really don’t want to know, skip to the next part), but it turns out I’m exactly the kind of person who would tag in a dance remix Uncharted 2 Title screen music.
astronomy robot difficulty
This isn’t one of those overly masochistic platformers by any means, but astronomy robotThe level of challenge is fair. Astro can die in one hit (except in the excellent boss fights, where you can hit three), so careful play is not only rewarding, but necessary.
At times, the number of enemies can be a little overwhelming and deaths can feel a bit unfair, but checkpoints are frequent and load times are instant, so who cares?
I would say astronomy robot If you try to do this 100%, the game will become more difficult and more interesting. I recommend this if you want the full experience.
astronomy robot Performance
Unexpectedly technical performance astronomy robot It’ll be disappointing, but here we are.
While the game looks visually stunning and runs at 60 frames per second (there’s no on-screen frame counter as far as I can tell), I immediately noticed that it would have a constant lag every few seconds. Stuck and stopped. It lasted the entire time I played the game, and I’m playing the latest patch. I quickly got used to it and enjoyed the game, but it can seriously distract you if you think about it too much.
I think this is something that can and will be patched out of the game, but for now, astronomy robotI’m definitely going to lose some points.
yes astronomy robot Is it worth buying?
I really hate that guy.

Yes, astronomy robot Worth buying!
While I don’t think some people would feel comfortable shelling out $60 for a game that can be wiped out in a few days, the experience itself is worth it. Team Asobi has made perhaps the most purely fun PS5 exclusive yet, and it’s easily one of the best games on this sadly short list.
Despite some minor qualms, its referential nature generally works. If Sony commissions more games for the Astro platform, I don’t think Asobi can maintain this aspect of those games, but for a game, it’s cool. Add to that its gorgeous visuals, catchy music, and great platforming mechanics. astronomy robot is one of the best games on PS5.
