It’s been a crazy week for Sony. Just a day ago, they had to announce the closure of Concord, the live-action shooter from Firewalk Studios that launched less than two weeks ago. This is undoubtedly the biggest failure in the history of the PlayStation brand. However, while Concord may have been laid to rest forever, PlayStation’s latest exclusive is ready to greet its adoring public with rave reviews.
Super cute platformer Astro Bot launches on PS5 tomorrow, September 6th, and the reviews are already starting to roll in. In fact, Astro Bot is the highest-rated game of the year according to Opencritic and Metacritic.
Well, that’s almost it. On Metacritic, this question is a bit confusing, as Astro Bot is currently ranked second with an impressive score of 94. The first place is “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree” with a score of 95. highest indie games 2024.
On Opencritic, the answer is clearer, as Astro Bot currently has a score of 95, one point ahead of Fromsoft’s big add-on.
This impressive score also means Astro Bot is now the highest-rated PlayStation exclusive on Opencritic, and the eighth-best-reviewed game. The site’s previous highest-rated PlayStation game was God of War 2018, a game created by Kratos.
Metacritic’s history goes back further than Opencritic, so Astro Bot doesn’t rank as high. There, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was hailed as PlayStation’s highest-rated game. Meanwhile, Astro Bot’s score of 94 puts it alongside a host of great games, including Gears of War, God of War, Call of Duty 4, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Devil May Cry. It’s a good company to join.
Of course, good reviews don’t always equal sales, so we’ll have to wait and see if the adorable Astro sells millions of copies. But interestingly, I have to say, there was a lot of hype surrounding Astro’s AAA full-game debut, especially considering how awesome his previous adventures were.
