As Larian prepares for its next big release, it’s facing a small problem: It keeps coming up with ideas that were already done in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios is hard at work on its next game, but the hit RPG is blocking new ideas.

If you can believe it, Baldur’s Gate 3 has been in early access for a year. I know, I know, the passage of time is a daily existential crisis, but let’s put that aside for now. Larian is still doing some work on the beloved RPG, with registration for the upcoming seventh patch closed beta going live last month. The patch will be released in September, but of course, the studio is also working on several new “very ambitious role-playing games” and also held a Larian Leadership Summit early last month. But it turns out that coming up with new ideas can be difficult, especially when you’ve had so many good ideas from previous games.

To mark the game’s first anniversary, PC Gamer spoke to the game’s writing director, Adam Smith, about how coming up with ideas for the studio’s next game can be difficult. “One of the biggest problems we have right now is that every time we talk about things, we say we did this in BG3,” Smith said. “Looking back, we did a lot of that in BG3.” For Larian, this isn’t actually a new problem, as it was apparently present in Baldur’s Gate 3 as well as Divinity: Original Sin. Also faced similar problems.

“The same goes for development. Do they already see this pattern? Do they already use these verbs in this order? Do they already have this emotional arc? So you’re constantly trying to make sure they get new ones. Experience, you’re not just repeating yourself, you’re not just giving them content for content’s sake.

Of course, Baldur’s Gate 3 did extremely well and won many awards, so I’m sure Larian will do well as well. You just have to wait a while.
