The failure of “Borderlands” at the box office does not mean that Hollywood is giving up on video game movies. Perhaps thanks in part to the success of the two Sonic the Hedgehog movies, another Sega classic is about to make its way to the big screen: Eternal Champions.
Skydance is developing a live-action “Eternal Champions” movie via The Hollywood Reporter . The game was originally released by Sega in 1993 for the Genesis, and the story revolves around a tournament to determine who will be the new Eternal Champion. Characters from the past, present and future come together to battle until one side emerges victorious. The winning participants will restart their lives and fulfill their destiny as champions of humanity. The rest return to the moment of their respective deaths.
Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom screenwriter Derek Connolly will write the script for Eternal Champions. His previous credits include Safety Not Guaranteed, Kong: Skull Island, Detective Pikachu and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. His upcoming projects include director Weiss Ball’s “The Legend of Zelda” movie for Sony and a “G.I. Joe”/”Transformers” crossover starring Chris Hemsworth.
Sonic the Hedgehog producer Toru Nakahara will produce Eternal Champions for Sega, while David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will serve as producers on behalf of Skydance. The Eternal Champion movie currently does not have a release date.
