Written and directed by Baker, Anora Star McGee Madison (scream 5better things) as the eponymous heroine (she will prefer this name if you call her Ani). When she’s not getting shit from her sister/roommate in her shabby Brooklyn apartment, this twentysomething is shaking her thong-clad ass in strip clubs with a charming smile on her face . Like Baker’s previous films, sex work is presented with candor and humor. So in a montage of lap dances, Ani eats dinner out of a Tupperware bag while arguing with her boss about her rights as a freelance contractor. This office comedy simply demystifies a job that American audiences both fascinate and condemn.
However, Ani quickly finds a way out of her predicament when a sweet-looking and suspiciously wealthy Russian boy offers her a sugar daddy deal. What started as a doorstep quickly escalated into a trip to Las Vegas and a quickie wedding. But this is not a pure love match for either of them. For Ani, it’s a chance to be a trophy wife to a young, sexy, wealthy husband who she actually enjoys hanging out with. For Vanya (Mark Edelstein), Arnie is a ticket to a green card that will allow him to stay in the United States, away from the onerous demands of his Russian oligarch parents. As you might expect, their honeymoon was short-lived. Soon, two thick-necked thugs arrived at Vanya’s New York City home and demanded he explain rumors that he was getting married under the job.
Mafia movies train us to be prepared for violence in such situations. Baker delivers on his promise, but not in the way you expect. Rather than showing men brutalizing beautiful, scantily clad young women (which is a real danger for women in sex work), Arnie turns the tables and shatters with wild and disturbingly funny footage Got them.
Ani is not a frightened mouse, she is angry at these intruders whose purpose is to bully her into giving up on her dreams and dethroning them. What follows is a dizzying road trip movie. The story’s emotional arc has dizzying highs and stomach-churning lows, while the stunt work includes (but is not limited to) the aforementioned fight scenes with shattered glass and a broken nose (not hers). On top of that, Madison has to carry the story because every man near her heroine acts like a clown or a bully.
All of this requires more than just Julia Roberts-level charisma, and she certainly does. It requires a smirking self-awareness, a biting sense of humor, and a vulnerability that can flash defenses in the blink of an eye. Madison didn’t perform Arnie; From meticulously painted pedicures to wire hair extensions, she embodies the full potential of a woman. Arnie may not look like someone you know, but by the end of the movie you’ll know her very well.
Falling in love with Arnie is easy. We’re not the only ones doing this.
Yura Borisov excels in Anora.

Whether you’re familiar with it or not, from the moment he makes eye contact with Arnie, it’s easy to see why. Although Igor was brought in in case of trouble, his face showed no aggression or threat. He is no fool number two as he has a sparkling eye and a keen understanding of every situation he finds himself in.
Despite the shouting, preaching and drama surrounding him, he spoke few words and spoke softly. He steadily and subtly becomes the antithesis of the other characters, quietly creating space for Arnie’s feelings and thoughts that others deny. The character’s development relies so heavily on physicality that every move of his eyebrows, shrug of a shoulder or curl of a finger carries weight. As Arnie begins to notice this, the film moves further and further away from the conventions of mafia drama or Hollywood happy endings and into the path Baker has charted. Its ending is both funny and frustrating, yet satisfyingly cathartic.
Anora Undoubtedly one of the best this year.
Taking viewers from the sweaty backrooms of strip clubs to the silk sheets of luxury apartments, to the dazzling neon-lit promenades of Las Vegas and back to the spicy Russian restaurants of Coney Island, Anora Be great alive. Madison is the brightest star here, her charisma is absolute, and she wields her Brooklyn accent like a whip to show off or wreak havoc at will. The supporting cast – including Lindsay Normington’s villainous antagonist – are very much rooted in Baker’s Brooklyn, full of bumbling intimidation and reckless desires that breed both biting commentary and even sharper laughs. But Borisov proved the perfect foil for Madison, making her shine even brighter under his gaze. He reflects our growing awe of the badass woman who won’t – to borrow the words of another 2024 film sex worker – Won’t Accept that she doesn’t deserve a life.
Drew Daniels’ cinematography emphasizes this passionate tone, allowing us to get closer and follow Ani’s shoulder as she strides onto the stage or takes on a challenge. Brilliant colors – rich reds, cool teals – set against elegant beige or urban gray surroundings make Ani stand out every moment. common, Anora It’s a visceral experience that makes the viewer no longer a voyeur, but a member of the cast. And just like that, our pulses race, our eyes widen, and our hearts dance like our heroes. Anora Providing a glorious thrill, bold and brilliant.
