This work has been in the works for many years, and Wickham and company worked extensively to ensure that the book would be the best version it could be – and they have succeeded, as the end result is remarkable. Just like in the 90s, rich action It’s making a comeback and needs your attention.
Fans of the Hewlett and Wickham collaboration Chimpanzees Might be unfamiliar with one of their first collaborations. Originally published in face magazinea touchstone of British culture in the 1980s and 1990s, rich action is a series of comics focusing on the misadventures of Whitey Action and Terry Phoo. The show runs the gamut from irreverent humor, ultra-stylish visuals, offbeat crime-fighting, and now more topical political satire and commentary. This is similar to Hewlett’s legendary work tank girlwhich contained elements of what would become the first phase of the Apes universe storyline, to which Wakeham contributed greatly. This series has been completely out of print for at least ten years and has become a rarity – I would see dealers putting the issue Face contain rich action Due to the subsequent success of Gorillaz, it was sold for a ridiculous price. Since the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, Wakeham has been working with a wide range of support teams to try to get rich action Reprinted in a large deluxe edition, it’s in the hands of a whole new generation of readers who are fans of Wickham and Hewlett’s work.
I was delighted to be invited to attend a launch event on Thursday 28th November to celebrate the release of this book. held at Cartoon Museum It was a fantastic evening in London, hosted by them in partnership with Titan Comics and Mat Wakeham. The positive vibe was contagious – and it was a well-deserved victory for Wickham and company, finally seeing their blood, sweat and tears pay off in the gorgeous hardcover book before them. Everyone looked tired and relaxed, proud and excited, and more than happy to give people a glimpse of the book and discuss the history of its creation. Representatives from Titan Comics gave speeches, as well as Wickham himself, detailing some of the book’s roller-coaster history and what it meant to him to see everyone there celebrating the book’s release. It was a wonderful experience and seeing Jamie Hewlett’s original artwork in person is something I will never forget – in my opinion, one of the best pieces of art in the medium, Although I admit I’m biased.
The book itself is an awe-inspiring wonder. Apart from rich action Within the comic, there are dozens of pages of behind-the-scenes material—Hewlett’s test sketches, designs and page layouts, Wickham’s scripts, interviews and pitches. This is a complete prose novel set in the world of Phoo Action, with new illustrations by Hewlett. There are also articles and informational articles about the two creators and British culture in the 1990s. It has nearly five hundred pages of information, and painstaking care has been poured into every page. This is a book full of great messages for anyone who wants to create something like this rich actionperfect for both old fans who want to learn more and new fans who are just getting involved.
This release is the result of years of passionate love, hard work and the utmost dedication. If you’re a fan of Wakeham and Hewlett, Gorillaz and Tank Girl, or just a fan of ’90s fashion and culture, you should definitely check this book out. While it’s not cheap (and why should it be?), it’s well worth the purchase. I still continue to read this book because I can’t help but turn every page and soak in how extraordinary it is to exist.
