The story of the first novel takes place in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island in Canada at the end of the 19th century, where there is an 11-year-old orphan girl named Anne Shirley Sent by mistake to middle-aged siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. The siblings originally planned to adopt a boy to help them run their farm. The novel tells the story of Annie’s adventures in school and in the town.
The animated adaptation will follow Anne’s growth from a girl to a woman, through her relationship with siblings Matthew and Marilla, her friendship with Diana, and her romance with Gilbert. (Some of these story elements appeared in Montgomery’s later sequel novels.)

In 1979, the original novel became the inspiration for a Japanese television animated series for the first time. Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, only yesterday, Pompoco) directed the series, and a few years ago he and Hayao Miyazaki will find Studio Ghibli. In fact, Hayao Miyazaki (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away, rollback) was responsible for the layout and design of the first 15 episodes, as well as future Ghibli directors Kondo Yoshifumi (whisper of heart) designed the characters and oversaw animation for the series.
