Anna Kendrick shares how she marketed her role as director in new Netflix movie contemporary women.

Directed by Kendrick and written by Ian Macdonald, the crime thriller is based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala, played by Daniel Zoccatto, who appeared in and won one episode. dating game. Alcala eventually became known as the “Dating Game Killer.”

Kendrick, who started out as an actress, later found herself pitching herself as a director, but she said she only wanted the role if the producers thought it was the best move. “I really feel so strongly about this movie that I just want to do what’s best for the movie, and if that means someone else coming in to direct, I’m fine with that,” said the actor, who also starred in “The Dating Game.” Contestant Cheryl Bradshaw in Kendrick’s Video Says hollywood reporter at the Los Angeles premiere on Thursday night.

“I think it’s probably the most contradictory campaign in the history of Hollywood because I can’t really do false confidence,” Kendrick joked. After she got the job, she called a supervisor for advice.

“The funny thing is, the first person I called was Paul Feig, and the only reason I say that’s funny is because it’s a movie about a serial killer and we mostly get to know him through comedy, like bridesmaid,” Kendrick explained.

“I admired him so much as a filmmaker and collaborator, and I really wanted to hear his perspective, and he had a strong love for me,” she said. “It was a very ‘no excuses, the buck stops with you’ kind of conversation, so I’m very, very grateful to him.”

The actress and director thanked her cast and crew for helping her throughout the process. “I’m surrounded by incredibly talented and supportive people, and they’re really the reason my career doesn’t keep falling apart,” she said.

Her castmates seemed to feel the same way about her. “I just have amazing things to say about her. She’s a great leader,” Zoccatto said. “She’s an actor first, so she understands it’s a process.”

Nicolette Robinson, who plays Laura in the film, added: “In this world, she’s an overachiever.”

Several actors said they were attracted to the project by the fact that the film is told from a female perspective. “I love that the story is told through the perspective of the victim. I think it flips the script on the serial killer narrative and is also a tribute to the victims,” said Kelly Jakel, who plays Sarah in the film.

Pete Holmes, who plays Kendrick’s character’s neighbor, seems to have similar feelings. “I’m the father of a daughter and it seemed like something that needed to be told and not just another horror movie or something like that,” he explained.

Kendrick said she would love to direct again, but she’s not yet sure what her next project will be. “Right now, trying to find something that I’m as passionate about as this is daunting [Woman of the Hour],” she said. “I really hit the jackpot with this script, and certainly with the cast and crew, so it was a challenge for me to find something that I loved so much.”

contemporary women Premieres on Netflix on October 18th.
