When we think of Andrea Martin, the first image that comes to mind is often her hilarious and memorable performances on SCTV.
However, her recent role as Sister Andrea in the Paramount+ series Wicked has shown audiences a whole new side to this versatile actress.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Andrea about her experience on the show and her insights were both interesting and enlightening.
“Oh my God, it turned out to be amazing,” Martin begins, recalling her unexpected journey with evil. “I didn’t really have any expectations because I was hired as a guest star and they made me the lead. So it was a really big surprise.

Martin shared an anecdote from her first days on set, a time of excitement and uncertainty. “I remember the first scene we shot was in the kitchen – David, Mike and I – and we were on location, which wasn’t very common in the last three or four years because we were mostly filming Shot in a studio.
“So I was like a real fish out of water, but I felt safe on set because I knew Robert and Michelle from The Good Fight. I was just there to be an actor.
Playing Sister Andrea allowed Martin to channel her extensive background in physical comedy into something entirely new.
“I’m not tied to that. I’m into crushing demons and driving around the studio at high speed. So I’m not in that church pew. Oh my God. That’s something.
Despite the physical demands of the role, Martin rises to the challenge with warmth and humor, making Sister Andrea a character that is both fierce and lovable.
The character of Sister Andrea also demonstrates another strength in Martin, one that perhaps she is not fully aware she possesses.
“I wish I could be like Sister Andrea. Maybe, somewhere inside me, I have no fear. Maybe I have more confidence than I thought.
Drawing inspiration from real-life figures such as Sister Simon Campbell, Martin infused Sister Andrea with a blend of faith and humor that made her a standout character in the show.
Martin’s reflections on her comedic roots reveal the unique tone of “Wicked.” She noted that she was almost offended to hear people think Sister Andrea was funny, yet she poured their heart and soul into her.
“If you’ve been doing comedies your whole life, like I have, maybe it’ll seep in,” she said, and we agreed that full-blown dramas tend to miss out on the humor-filled realities of life.
This balance of drama and humor allows “Wicked” to resonate with its audience, delivering exciting and relatable moments.
