The second Wednesday of the month gets tough, as evidenced by the plethora of great books on the August 14 Best Comics to Buy list. That’s always an interesting question, even eight. But man, did I have to make some tough decisions. You can find my picks below, along with the usual list of releases…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on August 14, 2024
Barb #1
writer: Garth Ennis
artist: Jason Burrows
Colorist: Andy Troy
Writer: Rob Steen
Publisher: Oops Comics
From legendary writer Garth Ennis (The Boys, Preacher) and superstar artist Jason Burrows (Times Cross, The Punisher): Meet Bubbles, a savage thief with a mind-blowing An itchy metal wardrobe and the world’s worst magic sword (named Barry). Together they travel through a fantastical landscape filled with wizards, dragons, demons, castles, and a band of very angry, very white knights. Bubbles wasn’t looking for a fight, but she never found a bad situation that couldn’t make it 100 times worse!
Why it’s cool: This is the funniest comic I’ve read in a long time. I don’t usually laugh when I read comics, but this one made me laugh twice. It’s just a funny satire of a certain type of internet complaint, presented through the tropes of a savage comic strip. The art looks great, the humor is clever, and I think this might be one of my favorite new comics of the year. Buy it.

Detective Dick Tracy and his allies begin to piece together the mystery of Green Eyes’ savage killings, but the mystery is revealing a larger, more deadly conspiracy that reaches into some unexpected places. Can the Man in Yellow uncover the truth and defeat the city’s newest boss in time to survive and prevent all-out war?
Why it’s cool: The series has gotten better and better since its launch. It’s like a pressure cooker book where the tension is building to more excitement. I love it.

Gilded Picture Frame #1
Story author: Maggie Craft Kindt and Matt Kindt
Art: matgent
Engraving: Sophia Hilmes
Publisher: dark horse comics
A classic whodunit murder mystery that spans the globe from Paris to Hawaii to Montenegro as we track down the most unlikely murder-solving duo in the history of murder solvers. Sam, an orphan in his early twenties, was adopted as a young man by wealthy Aunt Meri, who had eccentric tastes in antiques and travel. Together, Sam and Merry solved some of the world’s most notorious murders. As usual, their Parisian vacation is cut short when they stumble upon a bizarre murder scene, the likes of which only a deranged psychopath could pull off. But to solve the case, they must contend with jewelry thieves, art forgers, arms smugglers, a missing puppy, and a master French detective who might solve the case before them.
Why it’s cool: This international detective drama is an absolute treat, playing with the tropes of the genre while focusing its action on the interesting character dynamic between a young man and the aunt who adopts him. It’s subtle, smart, funny, and a total comedy delight.

Why it’s cool: I’m totally shocked by how much I love this new product Jonny Quest comics. I don’t know how long it’s been since I’ve seen any media with this character, but the comics do a great job of establishing what these stories are about…and finding new areas to explore. Morning Star #5
writer: David “DB” Andry and Tim Daniel
artist: Marco Finnegan
Colorist: Jason Wardy
Writer: Justin Burch
Publisher: Crazy Cave Studio
It’s all down the drain – the Garrett family burying their father Nathan, Jolene’s plans for closure and a new beginning for her children Charlie and Malabeth, and now even the Morning Star Watchtower is burned to the ground! Haunted by memories of her past and demented visions of her missing family, Jolene wanders the Kootenai forests, her anguish beyond reason, as does her quest to find her missing children. But something far beyond her wildest imagination reaches out to Jolene and pulls her back from the brink of madness. Something beyond space and time. No phone. There is no electricity. There is no transportation. There is nowhere to escape.
Why it’s cool: I loved this book from the beginning, and I’m happy to report this week that it absolutely held up, delivering an ending that felt sad but inevitable and satisfying. Please have more comics like this. If you missed a single issue, put this deal on your list.
