Enjoying a blue drink in a regular plastic cup while watching a movie? That’s $31!
one Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Promotional drinks at AMC Theaters are getting attention on social media for their seemingly exorbitant prices. That concoction is the “Sandworm Slayer,” a specialty drink sprinkled with gummy worms.
“Naw Beetlejuice has to show up and bring me a drink at this price,” one commenter replied, while another snarked, “You could buy 6 shares of AMC Theaters stock for $31, not sure which One share will be worth the price.
However, this comes with a certain context, which takes at least some of the fun out of it.
First up, it’s a 24-ounce cocktail made with blue and black raspberry juice and “premium vodka” (we’re skeptical of the “premium” part, but that’s what the press release says). So this isn’t just some blue soda.
Second, the Sandworm Slayer’s usual price is $21, which is expensive but more reasonable. According to AMC’s internal research – yes, they looked into it! — Priced at $21 (tax included) at 92% of AMC locations. The drink above was apparently purchased in Illinois, which has some unique alcohol pricing laws we won’t bore you with, which brings the price of the drink to $28.25 (plus tax).
So if you go to one of the 8 percent AMC theaters in Illinois and pick up the 24-ounce version of “Sandworm Slayer,” you can also get an energizing drink in a plastic cup filled with ice to keep you going . (Given that these are available at AMC’s MacGuffins Bar, one wonders if you could add a generous tip as well – come on, let’s get this blue juice for $40!)
Still, the final drink does look less exciting than the promotional photos of the drink, but you can say that about everything:
AMC adds that the drink “like many of our movie pairing drinks, is wildly popular at AMC theaters and sells very well over the weekend.” In fact, after a few sips, you’ll forget how many times you said ” Beetlejuice”.
