Alien: Romulus clearly borrows aesthetically from the original Alien movie, but director Fede Alvarez shared another slightly interesting point of inspiration.
We don’t know much about Alien: Romulus yet, but the first full trailer was released last month, and at least the atmosphere looks strong. It’s clearly an attempt to capitalize on the hazy look of the first film in the series, leaning into the film’s ’70s origins, but it turns out that’s not the only reference to the previous sequel. Director Alvarez recently spoke with Total Film (via GamesRadar) about the film, and he said the cast and crew will be on set to narrate the alien’s actions. Specifically, they imitate the way David Attenborough speaks in documentaries like “Blue Planet” or “Pulse of the Planet.”

“It’s almost like a nature documentary,” Alvarez explains of filming Alien, which required a total of nine puppeteers. “When we saw it on set, we joked, [like] “The creature is coming out slowly. It is looking for its mother’s scent…” The creature is not trying to appear scary. This creature is trying to come out of that cocoon, and that happens to be a human being. In a way, it’s almost like it’s more realistic but doesn’t betray all the beautiful things about the original design.
Even though the movie is set to be released next month, plot details are surprisingly lighthearted, which is honestly refreshing considering how much information most movies these days are revealed before they even hit theaters. A description at least explains something about the film: “While searching the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life forms in the universe.” The film also takes place between the original Alien and sequel to Alien, but how it ties into the bigger picture, you’ll have to wait until it hits theaters on August 16 to see.
