A famous slogan from the original 1979 Alien movie was “In space, no one can hear you scream.” This expression ignores the fact that the aliens seem to have excellent hearing, and they seem to be able to hear almost every sound in the spaceship or colony. This ability is on full display in a new preview clip for the next film in the series, Alien: Romulus.
The clip stars Isabela Merced as Kay, one of a group of ill-fated young people who think it’s a good idea to scavenge materials from an abandoned ship. In this scene, Kai is unarmed and trying to slip away from the alien. The alien seemed to be actively searching for Kai and listening intently, while she tried to stay as quiet as possible. It’s reminiscent of Jane Levy’s character hiding from the blind killer Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang) in “Don’t Breathe.”
Despite Kai’s best efforts, she is caught off guard when an alien appears nearby and drags away two bodies. It’s difficult to tell if these bodies are from Kai’s crew, or if they were originally stationed on the ship now occupied by facehuggers and xenomorphs.
Cailee Spaeny also stars in the film as Rain Carradine, alongside David Jonsson as Andy and Archie Renaux ) as Tyler, Spike Fearn as Bjorn and Aileen Wu as Navarro. “Don’t Breathe” and “The Evil Dead” helmer Fede Alvarez directed “Alien: Romulus” from a script he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues. The film will be released on August 16.
