As some may suspect due to the many hints in the play, Leo Varda is Death himself. This was most obviously hinted at in episode five, when a Ouija board used by the coven revealed that Death was in the same room with them, which we now know meant Rio Varda. However, before the episode’s gorgeous finale, Patty LuPone stole the show and gave us the performance we’ve been waiting for. This means we jump back and forth between different time periods as the show charts Lilia’s disorienting life that seems to have been leading up to this moment. Throughout, LuPone imbues each of her scenes with a palpable emotion that blows her co-stars out of their wits, all the while motivating her to sacrifice herself to save Agatha, Billy, and Jane. This is the climactic end to Lilia’s arc, with a performance that only Patty LuPone can deliver.
