After Baldur’s Gate 3 modders made custom maps possible, someone is already working on their own version of Avernus

Shortly after Larian released the official modding kit for Baldur’s Gate 3, one modder quickly figured out how to unlock a developer mode within it, allowing people to do things like create custom levels. Now, almost as quickly, early looks at the first few levels that modders have been developing are starting to emerge, including a version of Avernus.

If you’ve been living under a rock, these modding tools are part of BG3 Patch 7, which also includes a bunch of other stuff, if not everything some Dechi players could want.

Taking advantage of the level-editing possibilities of modder Siegfre’s Unlock BG3 Toolkit, several other modders have begun sharing their early work on custom maps.

Arguably the most interesting thing shown off so far (thanks to Dexerto) is a custom version of Avernus – you know, that’s where Karlach comes from – made by a Reddit user named katszenBurger. They shared some snapshots of the map in progress as well as a video showing Astarion running around it, which you can check out below.

“I’m also planning a lava area, and maybe I can make the lake explorable (although it’s a very empty open area), but so far these are my thoughts,” the modder said on the map wrote, adding that it took some inspiration from Caelid from Elden Ring, and yes, you can tell. They also paint a picture of how some such maps fit together in the toolkit editor, saying: “Skybox/Atmosphere/Shadows are controlled on a global level, and you can use their menus to configure scattering and fog effects. Something like that… In this case, the mountains and clouds are the grid.

This wasn’t the only map they tried to make either, they tried Castle as their first project. Looking around, I also found a post from another modder, Lotrich3, who has been busy developing an area in a picturesque little forest clearing with a boat, as you can see in this video.

In a comment on their Reddit post about Citadel, katszenBurger wrote: “It looks like the unlocked editor is very promising for custom campaigns, and I hope this means we end up getting some full user-made DLC or new campaigns, A lot like the ones in the Skyrim modding scene.

Are you impressed that Baldur’s Gate 3 modders have managed to create custom maps like this? Let us know below.
