With just a few weeks left until Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launches on October 25, Activision’s marketing machine is gearing up. A new event begins today (September 29) with the return of Peter Stormare’s character The Replacer. For anyone just catching up, the conceit of the ad is that the “replacement” is someone sent in to replace the guy who took the day off to play Call of Duty.
Stormare’s The Replacer debuted in 2013 and has been a mainstay of Activision Blizzard’s Black Ops marketing campaigns for years. The first in a series of commercials for Black Ops 6 starring The Replacer goes live today during Sunday’s NFL game lineup.
This is just the first of many ads to come, with Activision saying it has put together nearly 30 videos that will be available ahead of the game’s launch. Activision teased that “some famous names” will be replaced in the latest ad campaign, but didn’t provide any other details.
The new ad is pretty ridiculous, with The Replacements subbing in a firefighter rescuing a cat from a tree, a rideshare driver, and even a dad at a family dinner (and a spicy conversation with his mom). It seems even the Pope is playing Call of Duty, as a replacement took over his job for a day.
“Black Ops 6” will be launched on October 25th. Unlike previous years, the campaign will no longer be available for early access. Another big change is that Black Ops 6 will be available through Game Pass at launch, but only on the most expensive tier of the service.
