One imagines all kinds of global nightmare scenarios playing out in the months leading up to January 1, 2000, but none quite like Y2K A24’s new disaster comedy from director Kyle Mooney.
The story takes place on New Year’s Eve in 1999. Y2K It tells the story of how a group of teenagers celebrate the new millennium by throwing (or at least attending) the party of a lifetime. While everyone has heard of Y2K, what can Eli (Jaden Martell), Danny (Julian Dennison) and Laura (Rachel Ziegler) really think about? It’s how they might have met in anger, and how this night would have changed their lives forever. When the power goes out at the stroke of midnight, children are quick to laugh it off and think that maybe someone is just playing a prank. But they don’t know what to do when several appliances seem to activate and immediately start trying to murder them.
Oddly enough, a lot of the craziness manifests itself in Y2KThe trailer conjures up real panic, with people buying toilet paper and water in bulk, fearing a programming error could wreak havoc on our technology infrastructure. But it seems like the movie will descend into such absurd and silly territory that it might be a bit jarring when it hits theaters on December 6.
