A new Elden Ring boss may have just appeared in the real world after people much smarter than me discovered that Komodo dragons—the largest (living) lizards we know—had iron teeth middle. It’s metal if you ask me.
Komodo dragons are famous apex predators, and no matter where you find them, they are usually at the top of the food chain. It’s easy to believe that these hostile yet beautiful creatures weigh over 300 pounds, are known to attack humans (rarely), and sometimes even eat each other.
The discovery that these guys had iron teeth is one of the reasons why Komodo dragons are so powerful, with orange iron covering the jagged edges and tips of their teeth, making them incredibly sharp. We know these beasts tear flesh from their prey, and their newfound iron coating goes a long way to explaining how the creatures are able to maintain their pearly white color throughout their lives.

The new discovery is also important because ultimately it could help scientists and academics learn more about extinct species and dinosaurs, and how they lived. The teeth of Komodo dragons have jagged edges called “serrations.” Their teeth lack the enamel that we humans have, but nevertheless remain healthy enough to tear apart prey year after year.
Because of fossilization, it’s quite troublesome to look back in time and understand how certain species lived, but since Komodo dragons are one of the few living species that still have zipper teeth, there’s a lot to learn.
Now, I definitely don’t recommend taking your copy of the Darkmoon Greatsword to fight a Komodo dragon. I’m afraid no amount of “getting better” will help you win this battle. If you get bitten by one of these guys, a crimson flask isn’t going to save you from sepsis, considering the Komodo dragon’s mouth contains all the bacteria from eating carrion.
In the meantime, I’d stick with Elden Ring’s Magma Dragon and Bell the Dreader to fix your dragons. You’re more likely to emerge unscathed.
Before you head back to the land between heaven and earth to show Greyyor or Agthir who’s boss, let me introduce you to another badass creature that deserves a lot more recognition from us here: the demonic ironclad. While not as cruel as Komodo dragons, these guys are pretty tough. The beetle is so tough that it could be used to inspire stronger joints in engineering applications.
Beetles cannot fly. Instead, it has specially structured elytra (wings) that allow it to resist crushing; quite literally, it can survive being run over by a car, making it the insect’s ultimate tank.
Anyway, enough of the real-world Elden Ring-adjacent creatures for now, but please let us know about any other real-life beasts you think would make for a great fight in a FromSoftware game!
