Pokémon Go New Legends and mechanics are added over time – Alola Legends were only added earlier this year Pokémon Go Music Festival 2024. But the latest major update is one of the biggest changes to the game in years. In addition to finally adding a starter from the Galar region, and more importantly, it also adds the region’s unique Dynamax phenomenon. Unfortunately, many of the new mechanics introduced are not well explained.

What is a Dynamax Pokémon?
Dynamax is a special phenomenon from the Galar region that allows certain Pokémon to transform when exposed to Galar Particles (or Max Particles) Pokémon Go). Unlike Mega Evolution, which featured new designs and sometimes type changes, visually, Dynamaxed Pokémon just got bigger. They should also become more powerful when they gain a maximum number of moves. Such giant monsters can only be encountered and used within power points, as they have the largest particles required to trigger changes.
The important thing to remember is that not everything you capture Pokémon Go Could be Dynamax, of course you didn’t find out until that feature was added. The first two people with this ability were encountered by playing “To the Max!”. Special Research, Wooloo and Skwovet, after which only the Pokémon you defeat and capture in Max Battles can Dynamax. Are there any Mega Pokémon in the game?
Speaking of these special forms, Gigantamax Pokemon are currently not available in Pokémon Go. However, it is almost certain that they will be added in the future. If you navigate to the list of Pokémon you currently own and expand the search parameters, you can find filters for Dynamax and Gigantamax. It seems that we can only wait for the update.
What are power points in Pokémon Go?
Power points are probably the first thing you see in the game related to these mechanics. They look similar to gyms, except they’re bright purple, and there may be floating orbs near them if you don’t visit them every day. Every two days they disappear and a different set of power points pop up on the map.
Another similarity with Gyms and Pokéstops is that they will be tied to real locations. I’ve seen some suggestions for nearby businesses that closed a while ago, or some that just represent more general locations, so these may be popular suggestions but don’t make it into Pokéstops.
Get close enough and interact with it to see some floating spheres, which are the largest particles. Slide your finger back and forth to collect them. Apart from earning your daily 2km walk bonus or buying some from the store, this will be your main way to accumulate maximum particles.
Dynamax Pokémon that you can battle should also start appearing at energy points. These function very similarly to Raid Bosses and are called Power Spot Bosses, although you may more commonly hear them referred to as Max Battles. They have timers, and you can play against them with a team of up to four coaches (although early on, you can do it alone). If you haven’t seen anything yet, you may want to take a closer look at the “To the Max!” special research. I’ll get into how combat works soon, but I want to talk about Max Particles first.
What is the use of the largest particle?
Max Particles are used as currency to participate in Max Battles or to unlock and upgrade Pokémon’s Max Moves. In the former, the stronger the opponent, the greater the number required. It’s also not deducted until you win the battle, so you can try it as many times as you like.
The cost of upgrading the maximum number of moves is much higher. There are three different movement types:
- Maximum attack move – These are based on your Pokémon’s quick attack type.
- maximum guard – Increase your Pokémon’s defense.
- Max spirit – Increases the health of you and your allies.
By default, every Dynamax Pokémon has an initial level 1 attack move unlocked. The rest need to be unlocked, and then all three can be upgraded with max particles and candies. In some cases, just upgrading to level 2 can cost 600 particles and 100 candies. Save to level up your Pokémon in the regular way.
How does Max Battle work?
With everything in place, it’s time to break down how Max Battles works. There are a number of unique UI elements and mechanics that set it apart from other battles. Unfortunately, this is where the game confuses a lot of people.
The first step is when you see a Dynamax Pokémon above a power point, approach it and interact with it. You’ll be able to see how much time is left and the maximum particle cost to challenge it. Remember, you need to have your own Pokémon that can Dynamax Transform to battle it. Normal ones cannot be used in max battles. If you need it, you can get it from “To the Max!” Research or trade with friends.
Before we get into the battle, I do want to point out that you may see a number in the upper right corner. This represents how many trainers have defeated Dynamax Pokémon and then walked away from their own Pokémon. The higher this number, the greater the damage boost subsequent players will receive in combat.
After confirming the challenge, you’ll go to the preparation screen and select your team of three Pokémon (although you can still play if you only have one or two). As mentioned before, up to four trainers can also join forces at the same time.
These start out a bit like raid battles. Each one will focus on a target, using their quick attacks to build up charged attacks. Just like normal, you just click on that circle. You can jump left and right, but as usual, this doesn’t seem to make it possible to dodge attacks.
The unique thing here is the largest gauge at the top. Every attack you make fills it up, with charged attacks contributing more. Over time, small bubbles of extra energy will also appear next to your Pokémon. You need to slide your finger left or right to jump on the bubble to get it.
Once the max meter fills up, you’ll transition to a three-second countdown before Pokémon Dynamax. If you wish to have someone else’s Dynamax, you can switch to a different Pokémon during this short period of time. Your newly enlarged friend will then have the equivalent of three uninterrupted turns to use their maximum movement. The default option is Attack, but you can use Max Guard and Max Spirit if you unlocked them. If you’re playing with other people, I recommend having at least one trainer act as the team’s healer.
Even if you’re playing solo, this should be the end of a single-star battle. Otherwise, after three max moves are chosen and the battle continues, your Pokémon will return to normal size, but you’ll more likely have won by then. If not, drain your opponent of their remaining health and they will fall.
You can then choose to leave one Pokémon behind to earn candy and help future challengers. Must be someone in your party, although you can return them to you at any time. Next is the rewards screen, and an arguably unappealing 200 Magic Coin double offer. This might be worth it for higher level battles if the rewards also increase, but for now, it’s not the best use of the currency.
The last part is your chance to catch the giant animal you just fought. Your Advanced Ball will transform into a larger Dynamaxed version, so don’t be surprised by sudden changes. Here, throws can go farther, but you don’t need to throw like you would to catch a saw. Catch it and you’ll have another Dynamax Pokémon to add to your team.
At the time of writing, only one-star max battles are available. Those playing solo should be fine, as these are even easier than the one-star raids in my opinion. I’m sure the real challenge will begin once Niantic adds more powerful Pokémon to contend with.
