When it comes to the best comics to buy this week for September 4th, I’m impressed by the variety of content DC Comics is releasing. On the one hand, you have books like this Absolute Power #3continues to advance Washington, D.C.’s big summer events in fun ways. Black Label, on the other hand, has released some unique character-driven releases, including two entries in my top 5. You can find all my recommendations below, as well as the usual list of releases…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on September 4, 2024
Wonder Boy #5
Writer/Artist: Bajun
Colorist: Chris O’Halloran
Writer: Aditya Bidhikar
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
The Robins work together to fight their way out of the Demon Head’s stronghold, but Damian severing his family ties to Ra’s al Ghul won’t just be a matter of defeating the ninja. Is it possible for this fairy tale to have a happy ending? Or is Damian Wayne’s story an inevitable tragedy?
Why it’s cool: This wonderful take on Damian Wayne comes to an end this week in absolutely perfect fashion. This series is everything you want from a Black Label book—character-driven, boldly creative, and impossible to put down—and the finale may be the best issue yet.

Dawn Treader #5
writer: Ram V
artist: Evan Cagle
Colorist: Francisco Segarra
Colorful flats: Gloria Martinelli
Writer: Aditya Bidhikar
Publisher: dark horse comics
Everything must evolve! Driven by the story, Anita and Dawnwalker undergo unexpected changes as they confront the Prime. But within their transcendence lies the potential for hope and despair. As the true motives of alien monsters and native monsters are revealed, you must make sacrifices to protect the ones you love.
Why it’s cool: I think this might be the best comic of the year. To be honest, the team of Evan Cagle and Francesco Segala is so stylish and so good. What a visual feat they accomplished in these five issues.

Get Wrath #5
writer: Garth Ennis
pencil: Jason Burrows
Inker: Guillermo Ortego
Colorist: Nolan Woodard
Writer: Rob Steen
Publisher: Marvel Comics
You thought things were looking bleak and tough last period. You’re right, but things get worse for our “hero”.
Why it’s cool: Regular readers of this column will know that I’m a fan of writer Garth Ennis and think he’s done some excellent work lately, from hilarious romps like Babs or Marjorie Finnegan Creepy stories e.g. Travel through hell or ribbon queen. Well, he also reunited with frequent collaborator Jason Burrows to return to the Frank Castle story, and the result is the excellent miniseries, Get angry. This penultimate question really ramps up the tension here.

Minor Arcana #1
Writer/Artist: Jeff Lemire
Writer: Steve Wants
Publisher: Prosperity! studio
Teresa, the daughter of a small-town “psychic” con artist, returns to her hometown to care for her ailing mother, albeit reluctantly. But when Theresa discovers there may be more to magic than she initially believed, she’ll find herself entangled in a town desperate for her help…
Why it’s cool: This book immediately has echoes of two of my favorite Jeff Lemire comics – Essex County and Imperial City. But aside from the perfect deserted small town vibe, this is definitely a unique book. In short, you’ll definitely want to put this on your pull list…it has the makings of another Lemire classic.
price: $4.99
Plastic No More #1
writer: Christopher Cantwell
artist: Alex Lins and Jacob Edgar
Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo
Writer: Becca Kelly
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
Eel O’Brien may be a superhero now, but before he was anything else, he was a con man. Up until the accident that turned him into a pliant plastic man, Eel’s bones were already in bad shape… just because he no longer has bones doesn’t mean that’s still true. When an incident during a Justice League mission causes catastrophic cellular damage, Plastic Man discovers that he may not have time to make amends with the past he worked so hard to escape, or to save the soul of his son, who (unfortunately for him) may be from Dear old dad inherited more than just his superpowers…
Why it’s cool: This is basically a perfect Plastic Man comic. I love comics that take a hard look at what it means to be a backseat superhero, and this book does the best of that (reminding me of Marvel’s recent classic #1, Vision). It’s sad and gritty, but also hilarious, using a two-artist system that fits the narrative perfectly. I loved it and can’t wait to see the rest of the series.
