San Diego Comic-Con welcomes the Critters back to Ballroom 20 for a Critical Role fireside chat and cast Q&A panel!
From the start, the room was packed with fans anticipating the return of their favorite heroes. It was a blast when I became a moderator. Christina Ariel introduce Ashley Johnson (the last of us), Marissa Ray (Fallout 76), Jaffe of Tallis (World of Warcraft), Matthew Mercer (Baldur’s Gate 3), Laura Bailey(The Last of Us: Part 2), Travis Willingham (Marvel’s Avengers), and Liam O’Brien (Marvel’s Avengers).
As the actors walked to their seats, Sam Riegel’s chair remained empty. The actors were quick to let fans know that Riegel was busy and his absence had nothing to do with the video released on July 8 about his health.
“Yesterday we held our Prime Video Adult Animation Panel, where we showed off highlights from The Mighty Nein animated series, which releases on October 30,” Willingham told eager fans. “Are you excited?”
He received enthusiastic recognition from fans. Shortly after, they played this video for everyone in Ballroom 20, which depicts Laura Bailey’s blue tiefling Jester escaping from some guards before crashing into Welling Fjord, the orc played by Willingham. After the Joker falls in love at first sight, the clip quickly ends with the guards attacking them.
This transitions into new footage of Cinder King Thordak, the ancient red dragon adversary from Legends of Vox Machina Season 2, which is now heading into its third season, which fans suspect will be an epic finale.
Afterwards, they started answering questions from the Discord, such as what class they would want to be if they were taken from this world to Exandria (the world where Critical Role takes place), Marisha Ray If the past was chosen from a meeting a few months ago, Bailey In a full-circle moment in the game, even Lane O’Brien thought which character from Shakespeare’s play was loosely connected to his character Orim.
Eventually, the panel began a Q&A with attendees, and many stood up to share. One attendee stood out. He looked like a brute, standing over 6 feet tall and looking like a mass of muscle. The actors were quick to compare him to Grog the Barbarian, even having him say, “I want to be angry!” in his deep voice. Ballroom 20 erupted in cheers and bright smiles broke out on the faces of attendees.
Overall, fireside chats are a great way for the titular cast to connect with their fan base and let them know about upcoming special events. The anticipation for their new animated series is palpable, and looking at how many fans packed the room, cosplayers or not, it’s clear there’s a lot more to look forward to in the future of Critical Role.
