This is a most Nice collection of Batman movies. The highlights here are obviously Mask of the Phantasm and Year One, while some of the other entries are fun popcorn movies that you can binge on like comfort food. Dragon Soul reimagined Batman as a ’70s martial arts master, a cheesy adventure movie starring several other skilled DC warriors, and Assault on Arkham is an action-packed in-depth Rocksteady The Arkham universe, mainly focuses on the Suicide Squad, while Gotham stars several other skilled DC warriors.
The Killing Joke, Harley Quinn, and Hush don’t reach the same heights, but they remain true to DC’s source material and are still worth watching.
This isn’t the first box set to focus on a Batman animated film. In 2019, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Caped Crusader, DC released a collection of 18 films. The collection contains six films from the new collection, but the 80th Anniversary Collection has a standard 1080p Blu-ray. The Batman 80th Anniversary Collection is available now on Amazon for $63 (regularly $90). Considering it comes with a dozen movies not included in the 85th Anniversary Collection, it’s worth checking out even if you pre-order the new ones. If you’re wondering why there are fewer movies in the new series, it’s almost certainly because all the movies in the 85th Anniversary series are now available on 4K Blu-ray. Movies such as “Gotham Knight,” “Under the Red Hood” and “Son of Batman” are not available on 4K Blu-ray.
Interestingly, this year is also the 35th anniversary of the release of Tim Burton’s Batman movie. The film stars Michael Keaton, who remains unforgettable as Batman, and Jack Nicholson’s Joker who steals every scene. 4K Blu-ray currently costs $22, but for just $50 you can get a 4K Blu-ray collection of four movies: Burton’s The Batman , Batman Returns , Batman Forever , and The Batman and Robin, all on 4K Blu-ray. You can also buy Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed “The Dark Knight Trilogy” at a huge discount on Amazon.
