The first ukiyo-e print of Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Madoka, the protagonist of the anime, hopes to save all magical girls from the tragic cycle of hope turning into despair, which turns them into witches, and she herself becomes a magical girl.
Her desire is so powerful that it transforms her into a new cosmic law called the Law of Cycles. No one can obey or interfere with the laws of cycles. When magical girls are about to degenerate into witches, it appears and guides them to a higher realm.
We created an ukiyo-e woodblock print titled “Law of Cycles” illustrated by Madoka Ultimate by Shaft, the animation studio behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Please admire this ukiyo-e, which is carefully handcrafted by craftsmen with meticulous attention to detail.
The creative process of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints
Washi (Japanese paper)

Sculpture
The process of creating a Ukiyo-e woodblock print begins with dividing the design into different colors and then carving each block individually. This involves an extremely complex process, and even a millimeter deviation can seriously affect the entire image. Achieving perfectly aligned carvings is a testament to the craftsman’s years of dedicated training.
print
The next step is to print each color using traditional ink. This also requires great skill on the part of the craftsman, as even a millimeter of misalignment or insufficient pressure can cause the entire image to move.
