Man, Disney seems a little worried about the future of the Marvel Universe now that it’s bringing back Robert Downey Jr…. but he’ll be playing fan-favorite villain Doctor Doom.
I’m in the UK, so when I went to bed last night knowing that Marvel Comic-Con was coming up, I thought to myself “how bad could this be?” considering the company hasn’t been at San Diego Comic-Con for a while. Hall, and considering the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s popularity has been declining in recent years, it’s clear the company is going to do something big. “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” may have had great debuts, but “Ant-Man 3” and “Marvel” both underperformed at the box office, at least compared to earlier entries in the franchise. So how does Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige plan to solve this problem? First, he’ll be bringing back Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, with the Russo brother duo set to helm the next few Avengers movies.

Avengers 5 even has a brand new title because Marvel is moving away from Kang after Jonathan Majors was accused of assault and harassment, which he was later found guilty of. Now, Avengers 5 will be called Avengers: Doomsday. Yes, that’s because as previous reports have suggested, Doctor Doom will be the villain – and he’ll also be the villain in the upcoming Avengers movie, Secret Wars. This is the second thing Feige has done to bring people back to the Marvel Universe – he’s brought in Iron Man/Tony Stark actor Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor Doom.

I don’t know about you, but this feels ridiculous. Aside from being a somewhat cowardly decision creatively, there’s also the issue that many fans wanted Doom to be played by a Roman actor, because that’s the character’s legacy, a legacy that’s so important to his story. It’s clear that this will be some kind of multiverse game, and that’s all Marvel has to offer at the moment, so maybe that’s a bit of a red herring, but it still feels like a pretty worthy decision to complain about.
“Avengers: Doomsday” is currently scheduled to be released in May 2026, and “Secret Wars” is scheduled to be released in May 2027.
