I don’t care what your history books tell you. The biggest event of 1996 was not bill clinton’s re-election or classic movie premiere independence Day. This is the release of all four issues of the magazine Mark Wade–Alex Ross series Kingdom Come From DC Comics.
On Saturday at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Waid was working on a film about Kingdom Come for”Legend of heaven:Documentary Preview” panel. Moderator Mike Roy of packdirector Wade joins Remsi AtasiProducer Sal Abinantiand arrowverse writer Shawna Benson and Julie Benson.
Roy kicked off the panel with a trailer for the documentary, which included Wade and Rose, as well as comic book luminaries such as Brian Pulido, Gene Haand McFarland being interviewed Kingdom Come.
At Roy’s prompting, Wade began to tell Kingdom Comeorigin story. He said artist Alex Ross had just completed the series Miracle with writers Kurt Busiek, he came to DC Comics with an idea and a bunch of sketches. He told DC that he just wanted to work with a writer who knew DC.
Enter Wade, who knows more about DC mythology than even the names of every member of the Kryptonian Science Council. In addition to this, Wade is said to know Clark Kent’s Social Security number. While this information can now be obtained with a simple Google search, it was not readily available in the mid-1990s.
Wade and Rose met over a very productive lunch, and then Wade traveled to Rose’s hometown of Chicago for a weekend to develop the story. During the course of these meetings, Wade found his way to Superman in one of the final moments of the series, who donned Clark Kent’s glasses and regained his humanity in the process.
during creation Kingdom ComeWade would receive faxed drawings from Ross, who averaged 10 pages of drawings per month.
Legend of heaven Producer Abbinati atom) participated in the creation of Kingdom Come Almost from the beginning. Abinati, a young creator in Chicago, said he was lucky to be with Ross at the time. One day, Ross asked Abinati to model for him. He said he agreed there was some fear because… well, it was weird. Even weirder, Ross gave him a Captain Marvel (Fawcett comic book version) costume (possibly from paul religion) is used during the session.
Abinati soon learned that Ross was using models to create photo references for character designs Kingdom Come. Abinati is the prototype for Captain Marvel. He described the “roughness” for which he became famous for his involvement. His friends teased him about his resemblance, but as the series launched, he also gained fans Kingdom Come Ask him for autographs, including – and this is probably the highest compliment for his efforts – Fawcett superhero fans, who often congratulate him when they learn he’s Captain Marvel. Would he do it again? Unless Rose can get a better costume.
After concluding this digression, the documentary director Atasi mentioned that he conducted more than 30 interviews and was allowed to view archival materials related to the following events: Kingdom Come. Some sketches of DC heroes from Ross’ childhood appear in the trailer, as seen above.
“Kingdom Come Very cinematic,” said arrowverse Writer Shawna Benson. Before the superhero craze of the 2000s, there weren’t many good superhero movies. And the one from 1978 Superman and Tim Burton batman movies, but nothing like modern offerings. Benson says Kingdom Come Just “done really, really well,” especially in the ’90s.
Roy then asked us why the story still exists, and Wade explained his thoughts on Superman’s motivations and why he was quitting. That’s where the character of Magog was born, a group of “horror-dark” stand-ins, the super-violent characters that were popular in the early and mid-’90s. Wade and Roy continue to discuss that, for all the appearances, Superman is in Kingdom Come. Batman turns Gotham in the series into a police state. No one in the story is entirely correct.
“I see Superman’s fascism more clearly now than I did 30 years ago,” Wade said. Wade then admitted that he didn’t quite answer Roy’s question about the story’s continued relevance, and that he was in the final minutes of Always bluffing.
Wade explained that DC had a mandate at the time: Superman had to have a mullet, at least in the “current era” sequence (Kingdom Come set in the future). Wade agreed, even though it went against his belief in creating a basic, classic version of the character.
no discussion Kingdom Come It can happen without overshadowing Alex Ross’s magnificent art. Among the many characters used as character models, the panel paid special attention to the characters used as character models. Kingdom Come Narrator Norman MacKay – Rose’s father. This is especially poignant because Rose’s father died during the making of the documentary.
Roy then asked for more information about Ross and his involvement in the documentary, since Ross was known to not give many interviews. Abinati responded that this was not a problem as people thought: “Kingdom Come It’s Alex’s child. Ross was excited to talk about the book.
Wade also spoke of Ross’ love for the Golden and Silver Age comic book characters: “We could argue about Martian Manhunter for half an hour, and we did!”
Roy then pointed out Kingdom Come Superman’s Shield appears to have been adapted into the director’s version of Superman’s Shield James Gunn’s 2025 Superman Movie. Wade recognized this and said, “I trust James Gunn 110 percent.”
To complete the main part of the panel, Roy showed a clip detailing the early outlining work Kingdom Come. Then the Q&A began.
ask: “How do we bring Alex Rose back to Washington?”
Wade: “If I’m lucky, maybe I can do a cover.”
Ask: “What if you were doing Kingdom Come Now, which DC characters would you use?
Wade: “Jon Kent, son of Superman.”
Q: “What classic incident [events that are key to the character, inspired by the Spider-Verse films] Do you know the life of Superman? [Waid] If you were writing a biography of Superman, what would you use?
Wade: “I like Grant Morrison The school where “everything happens”…except maybe the mullets.
One thing Wade doesn’t accept is “[Superman] Never killed anyone. This received the loudest applause from the panel.
One of the final questions was about the “Needle in a Haystack” cameo [Beppo the Supermonkey, the Beatles and the Monkees, etc] Its characteristics are Kingdom Come. Wade said that unless he specifically wrote the cameo, it was Ross’ doing. Wade’s final words on the subject were: “This is a story about generals, not infantrymen.”
