Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Universe, but Iron Man is not. Instead, he’ll be taking on a new name and donning a new mask – that of one of Marvel’s greatest villains, Victor Von Doom. RDJ pioneered the MCU, introducing superheroes to Earth-616 in 2008’s Iron Man and concluding the role of Tony Stark in 2018’s Avengers: Endgame. This could be the coolest moment in the Marvel Universe, or it could be the silliest.
Downey showed off his new character on the Hall H stage, appearing in a Doctor Doom mask before tearing it off to reveal his face to a surprised audience. His comment was simple: “New mask, same mission.”
As part of Marvel Studios’ 2024 San Diego Comic-Con panel, the studio announced that directing team Joe and Anthony Russo will return to direct two new Avengers movies, with Avengers: Doomsday set to Released in 2026, Avengers: Secret Wars will be released a year later. Victor von Doom will serve as the main villain of both films.
Downey said in a recent interview that he would be “happy” to return to the Marvel Universe. “It’s an integral part of my DNA,” Downey said. “This role chose me. Look, I always say, never bet with Kevin Feige. It’s a losing bet. He’s the house. He’s always going to win.”
Victor Von Doom is a long-time enemy of Marvel’s founding family, the Fantastic Four, so it makes sense to introduce the character right after the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps .
Details are sparse other than titles and directors; we’re super excited Very I’m interested to see how Marvel Studios makes Robert Downey Jr.’s return—as an entirely new character—make sense.
“Fantastic Four: The First Step” will be released one year later on July 25, 2025. ” will be released in May 2027.
