Deadpool and Wolverine is a strange movie because it’s sandwiched between several different worlds. Obviously the two big ones are the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the old X-Men franchise, but more broadly it also encompasses all Marvel movie properties that aren’t Sony or Marvel itself. It’s a lot of stuff that never has any connection to each other. Even Fox’s “Daredevil” and “The Punisher,” released 14 months apart twenty years ago, are completely unrelated stories. Even if “Deadpool” had the ability to break the fourth wall, it would be too much to ask for all of them in one movie – but “Deadpool and Wolverine” is a solid effort to thank for that ’s series of cameos, covering more of the old Marvel movies than I thought possible – several of which were never even made.
The idea behind the universe’s story behind these appearances is that a good chunk of it takes place in the Void – a place at the end of time filled with variations of heroes and villains that the Time-Changing Authority has exiled for one reason or another. Just as this setting allowed the Loki series to introduce a host of amazing alternative Lokis, The Void allows Deadpool and Wolverine to include any past Marvel characters it wants .
All in all, Deadpool and Wolverine pretty much covers everything Marvel has to offer on the big screen, including the X-Men movies. Oddly enough, though, it doesn’t feature any of the real X-Men we know – all the characters in the movies who appear here are villains. It’s hard to know what that means, but hopefully they’re saving these people until the Marvel Universe’s franchise plot finally picks up again after spending the past few years on a bunch of different standalone story threads.
Regardless, I’m not sure how many more cameos Deadpool and Wolverine can make because there are just too many of them. Remembering them all can be difficult, so we’ve put together the list below to help you keep track. Take a look.
