From Cheryl’s sinister beginnings to her unexpected moments of redemption, Lahti shares her insights into what made Cheryl one of the show’s most compelling characters.

Looking back on the season, Lahti made no secret of her excitement and admiration for the show’s writers.
“I think the writers were wise to allow the audience to finally really care about her on some level because she’s so evil and wild and crazy. And this season, she really tries to do the right thing and finds herself with remorse and redemption.
It was a journey that captivated us all, and Lahti’s depiction made it impossible to look away.

Cheryl’s tumultuous relationship with Leland Townsend, played by Michael Emerson, has been a central plot point in the story.
When asked about balancing Cheryl’s conflicting sides, Lahti explained, “I think once Leland broke up with her… from that moment on, I thought, ‘I’m going to do whatever it takes to gain power, I’m going to Down with you, you bastard.

Lahti worked hard to create a backstory for Cheryl that gave her character depth. She imagines Cheryl’s past in the world of rock and roll, hinting at her history of abuse and toxic relationships that fueled her relentless pursuit of power.
Lahti’s chemistry with Michael Emerson is undeniable, which makes their on-screen tension even more palpable.
“A complete and utter joy. It’s fun to work with him. We improvise, we play, he’s totally willing to try anything and is such a sweet, lovable person,” said Lahti, emphasizing what made them The scene brings to life the spirit of collaboration.
Cheryl’s death scene was a heartbreaking moment for fans, and Lahti herself was thrilled. “I read the episode and cried. I was heartbroken. I was really shocked and saddened,” she revealed.
The decision to kill Cheryl was a hard one to swallow, but Lahti understood its place in the narrative. “I finally realized that in a show called ‘Wicked’ where there was a showdown between Cheryl and Leland, Leland was going to win.”

One of the most touching aspects of Cheryl’s storyline is her relationship with her daughter Kristen (played by Katya Herbers). Mother and daughter have a complicated relationship, but their final moments together provide a sense of closure.
“The filming process was really, really touching. Katya and I were crying, and I thought, I’m really grateful to have this moment of closure, to finally have love, because there was so much love between them.

Lahti recalled that the scene originally had more dialogue, but it was removed for the sake of realism. Despite the cuts, the emotion still shines through. “I haven’t seen it yet, but filming it was really, really touching,” she said. “There may be some moments of reconciliation and love between them.”
We asked Lahti what Cheryl’s last words might have been had they made it to the final cut. “I’m sorry. Please forgive me. I’ve tried my best.
“All the things you want to do on your deathbed, when you feel like you’ve done someone wrong, you want to somehow make amends and take responsibility and, I guess, ultimately be forgiven.”

One of Lahti’s favorite scenes from the season was in a confessional with Mike Colter’s David. “She finally asked for help, and I think all the guilt and regret started coming over her and she couldn’t suppress it,” she explained.
For Cheryl, confession was not about seeking divine forgiveness but about gaining David’s acceptance.
Lahti didn’t hesitate when discussing Cheryl’s ultimate fate and what she hopes for Leland. “What she wants more than anything is for him to be held accountable and locked up in prison for the rest of his life and away from my daughter and granddaughter.”
As we wrapped up our conversation, it was clear that Lahti had a deep connection with her character and was moved by the fan response. “It means you cried a little when she died,” she said, deeply moved by my unabashed compassion for Cheryl.

Christine Lahti’s portrayal of Sheryl Luria in “Wicked” is nothing short of extraordinary. She turned a character who might have been a one-dimensional villain into someone with depth, vulnerability and an undeniable spark.
