Although HBO recently scrapped plans for a Batman Arkham Asylum spinoff, director Matt Reeves has big ambitions beyond his upcoming Penguin series starring Colin Farrell. Now, Reeves has revealed that his shared universe is called the Batman Epic Crime Saga, and he has more potential spin-offs in mind.
“When we write [The Batman], and I was like, “Hey, you know what? I think we could make some cool shows,” Reeves told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s actually why I wanted to do a deal with Warner Bros. Love your work.
One of the previously possible spinoffs would center around Batman’s first year as a vigilante, a corrupt cop in the Gotham City Police Department. Reeves told Entertainment Weekly that certain aspects of previous projects have been incorporated into Penguin’s storyline. However, Reeves and his collaborators have yet to decide which Batman-related character should get the spotlight in the next spinoff.
“We have another TV exploration to do,” added producer Dylan Clark. “We looked at the entire world around Batman – the adversaries around them, all the crime they have to deal with in the city – and tried to figure out the best areas to explore.”
Reeves also said that “Penguin” will bridge the gap between “Batman” and “Batman Part 2”. “Penguins” will premiere on HBO and Max on September 19.
