Back in August of last year, I wrote about the best baby boomer shooters on Steam Deck and PC. Since then we’ve had new games, DLC, updates, and I’ve found the time to play some games that I missed at the time. This has been going on for a while, and I’ve actually held off on Selaco (worth it) and Fallen Aces (which doesn’t work on Deck yet, but will in the future). As with the last list, I won’t bother with a set number and will only include games like these that I want you to play on your Steam Deck and PC. I also want to clarify that this list should be considered a supplement to my original article from last year. Each of these games is still worth playing, and I’m not including them here except for DLC or expansion packs. This list is in no particular order and I’ve also included some bonuses that I cover at the end.
dusk hd
Do I need another reason to recommend DUSK? Well, DUSK is already incredible, but New Blood’s offering of DUSK HD as a free DLC pack, which is basically a complete remaster of the original game, is incredible, and they absolutely hate money. Either way, if you have DUSK, declare DUSK HD and change the compatibility on the Steam Deck to Proton Experimental or something, as native Linux builds don’t include DUSK HD. You need the Windows version of DUSK HD on Steam Deck to use it. Once you do that, you can experience one of the best shooters ever with even better visuals. let’s start. Also listen again to the DUSK soundtrack composed by Andrew Hulshult.
Sierra Leone
Selaco had a very promising demo last year and I expected the early access version to be great. I didn’t expect it to be so good. Selaco runs on GZDoom, but it almost doesn’t feel like a game built on that engine, with an immersive experience filled with superb gameplay and great visuals. Even though it’s currently in Early Access, Selaco is worth more than full price, and it’s custom Steam Deck optimized from the start.
Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered
For many, Nightdive’s Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered will be a remaster of a game they’ve played before. For me, the Steam Deck version of Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered was basically my first time using it, which is why I included it in my main list. I love surprises with games I’ve never played before, and Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered performs well from start to finish on the Steam Deck. Even though this is a remaster of an older game, I appreciate the gameplay and interactivity in addition to all the Star Wars content included here. This is probably my favorite version of Star Wars in any medium lately.
Post: Brain damage
When I wrote my first Boomer Shooter article, I had yet to play Postal: Brain Damage, but I’m glad I finally got around to playing it. It’s crazy and reminds me of a more over the top version of Slayers X. I liked it so much on the Steam Deck that I bought it on PS5 and was surprised to find it had 120hz and DualSense capabilities. It’s an easy recommendation, and it even comes in multiple bundles with other games for extra discounts.
Ion Fury: Aftershock
The original Ion Fury was very good and had a lot of potential from day one. With Ion Wrath: Aftershock, the developers have basically done everything I wanted from a sequel, but delivered it as a shorter expansion. It has an annoying part that brings the experience down a bit, but if you enjoyed Ion Wrath, Ion Wrath: Aftershock is a must-have. I hope it comes to Switch soon so I can replay it.
AMID EVIL – Black Maze
When I wrote about AMID EVIL last year, I briefly mentioned AMID EVIL – Black Maze, but it deserves a separate recommendation here. AMID EVIL – Black Labyrinth is a prequel to AMID EVIL, sold as DLC for the latter. Featuring new weapons, levels, and more, it offers a very good value proposition for both AMID EVIL fans and new players who want to combine the game and expansion packs. This expansion also significantly raises the standard of visuals in AMID EVIL, or maybe it’s my Steam Deck OLED that makes everything look prettier. Regardless, AMID EVIL – Black Labyrinth is a must-have and it features new music by Andrew Hulshult, so go buy it.
Mullet Majake
Mullet Madjack is simply awesome. It looks gorgeous, feels great, and is a great boomer shooter with an aesthetic we don’t usually see in the genre. If you have even the slightest interest in the genre and like the 90s anime aesthetic, this is a game worth picking up now. I recommend downloading the demo on the Steam Deck and enabling the gyro controls to see how to find the controls, as this is the only aspect that may not work for everyone given the fast-paced nature.
Forgive my father 2
When I first played the early access version of Forgive My Father 2, I was impressed that it basically fixed all the problems in the original and delivered a lovely Lovecraftian FPS experience that resonates with you Unlike most things seen in the genre. It has received a number of updates since its launch, but is currently still in Early Access. It’s full of atmosphere and fun to play, but remember, it’s not a complete game yet. It still has some teething issues that I hope will be ironed out before early access.
Warhammer 40,000: Bolter – Expanding Crucible of Corruption
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a surprising baby boomer shooter that I recommend to those unfamiliar with Warhammer 40,000. I ended up replaying it on Steam, PS5, and Switch. It has lovely visuals and gunplay, and has generally been fun to replay on Steam Deck and PS5 since release. I had no idea it had DLC, so the Warhammer 40,000: Bolterers – Corrupted Forge expansion pack was an even bigger surprise. It includes new environments, enemies, and two brand new weapons that are awesome to use. If you like the base game, the Warhammer 40,000: Bolterers – Corrupted Forge expansion pack is a must-have.
Zorchi
When I was looking for more boomer shooters, my friend said Zortch was the best $5 game on Steam. I think he’s exaggerating as usual, but this is truly an incredible boomer shooter with elements of horror and comedy. fighting. I can’t believe this is on a custom engine. It’s crazy how great the levels and gameplay are for such a low asking price.
beyond sunset
I don’t remember why I bought Beyond Sunset when it came out on Steam, but I grabbed it on day one and didn’t regret it for a minute. It’s not a huge step forward for the genre, but does a lot right with its own charm and great beauty. It also has more of a story focus than you’d expect from a boomer shooter, but keep in mind that it’s in Early Access right now. There is a free trial version of this product, so give it a try before buying. It also offers some discounted bundles.
vizodum
When I played the original early access version of Wizordum, I thought its premise, gameplay, and aesthetics were well worth the purchase. Recently, its new episodes were rolled out as free updates, making Wizordum even better. I think it’s the perfect combination of Wolf 3DS and DOOM, with its colorful aesthetic shining brightly on the Steam Deck OLED. If you’re not interested in the demo in the trailer, try the demo. This is undoubtedly one of Apogee’s best releases in recent times.
bonus game
The games below are either not pure boomer shooters or have some caveats that I would recommend. For the latter, I’d wait until there’s a discount before purchasing.
PO’ed: Final Edition
I had never heard of PO’ed until Nightdive announced a remake in the form of PO’ed: Definitive Edition. After playing it, I don’t know if this is a full-priced game that I would recommend, but the work that goes into it is certainly good. I recommend buying it on sale because it’s fun, but definitely not one of my favorites on the list.
Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion Remastered
Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is the final game in the Turok trilogy, and Nightdive’s remaster is fantastic. The problem here is that I don’t think it’s as good as the first two games, and it’s more expensive than the first two games. If you can get a discount, I recommend buying it after playing the first two games. Even as someone who has only played Turok because of the Nightdive version, Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion Remastered is excellent and worth your time.
Fallen Ace
Fallen Aces is awesome, but it’s currently unplayable on the Steam Deck. I know there are some workarounds posted online, but none of them worked reliably for me on my Steam Decks. I wanted to feature Fallen Aces here so you can keep an eye out for when it gets fixed on the Steam Deck. The demo was already great, but the release of the full Episode 1 into Early Access on PC is even more amazing. I can’t believe it’s so cheap now. The new blood really hates money. Regardless, I hope it gets fixed soon so I can play it on my Steam Deck. Until then, I recommend you buy it and play it on your PC.
That way, you can play the next year of (hopefully) the best boomer shooter on the Steam Deck feature. I can’t wait to see what content is released in the coming months and for the Early Access game to receive more content and updates before 2025. If you have any feedback on this feature or what you’d like us to do on the Steam Deck, please let us know in the comments below. Hope you all have a nice day and thank you for reading.
