While digging one of the many tunnels for the Moscow Metro, Soviet workers excavated the ruins of a dungeon. The construction site was closed, the subway tunnels were rerouted, and in the din, no one noticed that the foreman of the tunnel workers had installed a small “souvenir” – a book-sized frame made of precious metal with an inscription in an unknown language. Decades later, the foreman’s grandson Ilya, working as a courier, discovered this ancient artifact in a pile of old trash. He ignores the heirloom’s true value and soon learns of it from a mysterious stranger. This relic is the key to the secret location of the priceless ancient library belonging to Ivan the Terrible. What Ilya doesn’t know is that the search for the lost library has been going on for centuries, and now very powerful people are hunting him. Ilia and the mysterious stranger decide to try their luck and find the library.
