Gaming industry veteran Hideki Kamiya says he still hopes to make sequels to PS2 classics Okami and Viewtiful Joe.
Today, Kamiya is probably best known as the creator of Bayonetta, though he created a number of games throughout the year. You obviously won’t forget Devil May Cry, but of course there are two other beloved games he created: Viewtiful Joe and Okami. The former did get a sequel, but the latter Zelda-like RPG never got one, which seemed a bit too much for Kamiya, as shown in the second part of his interview with Ikumi Nakamura (who previously worked on Bayonetta) part of what is said.

“I think creators have a responsibility to create sequels that fans want to see. Although I sound high-key, it’s been a while since I left Ogami. But I still feel that I haven’t fulfilled my duty. So Capcom, Please let’s work together. Even Nakamura herself said “please”, as Okami is another game she’s collaborated on with Kamiya – in fact, it’s her first credited game character. Kamiya or Nakamura, but I’m also excited to see Okami 2, Capcom!

In addition to Okami 2, Kamiya also talked about a hypothetical Viewtiful Joe 3. While Okami recently appeared in a Capcom survey asking fans if they would like the sequel, Viewtiful Joe did not appear in the survey. “That’s just because eight people have played ‘Pretty Joe,'” Kamiya quipped. “That game also ended midway, so I needed to finish it. The last survey Capcom did didn’t have “Big Handsome” as an option, so I sent a reply saying, ‘I’m Hideki Kamiya, let me make “Big Handsome”. “Handsome Guy” option, so I sent a reply saying, ‘I am Hideki Kamiya, let me make a sequel to “Handsome Guy”.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, his comments did not appear in the survey results. “The director himself asked for a remake of the game, but they won’t even talk about it. What the hell, Capcom?” Kamia asked. “Where do my reviews go? They’ll post reviews from other players like ‘Resident Evil was the first game I bought for the PlayStation’ or ‘I’ve loved playing Mega Man since I was a kid.'” Those reviews are important, but if It would be great if they also mentioned me as a director, I am also a gamer and I hope they can treat me like a gamer.
You can’t really read the tone from the text, so I can assure you that he and Nakamura laughed together during the discussion, so Kamiya probably wasn’t all that bothered by it. Capcom should let him work on Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3, though.
