Movie review:
- Wuchak: ***Funny teen comedy starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay, but disturbingly dishonest***
- Tom Cruise plays a preppy kid from suburban Chicago in “Dangerous Business” (1983). When his parents go on a trip, he has the house to himself and enlists the services of a call girl (Rebecca De Mornay), which leads to serious and interesting problems.
- The film features the iconic scene of Cruise lip-syncing Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rockin'” in private. We’ve all done it. Regardless, “Dangerous Business” is similar to “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986), but with the artistry of “Less Than Zero” (1987), minus the melancholy.
- As far as overall entertainment goes, this is an easy 7/10, but I had to lower my score due to the glorification of prostitution. Yes, I realize this is a teen comedy and you have to accept it to enjoy it, and that’s what I did.
- But the depiction of prostitution and prostitutes is pure fantasy, which I think is dishonest and irresponsible. Are these guys really going to be so sexy to these women who have sex with several strangers every day? Am I the only one who finds this disgusting? Wouldn’t at least some of them worry about sexually transmitted diseases? Doesn’t the debauched lifestyle of prostitution have a negative psychological and spiritual impact on women? Won’t there be any signs of “wear and tear”? Of course, none of these types of realities are resolved.
- The film is 1 hour and 39 minutes long and was filmed in Highland Park, Illinois and the Chicago area.
- Grade: C
