Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and the powerful forces of nature at work in marketing tornadoMany people may not know that Lee Isaac Chung released a sequel to the 1996 hit. A group of Powell’s YouTube stream weather fans include Brandon Perera, Katy O’Brien, Sasha Lane, and most of 20 Fans of music from the 1920s and 2010s are excited about Tunde Adebimpe, best known as a radio and television frontman. Adebimpe plays a weather boy named Dexter who is full of technology, although he does not understand Ton In terms of screen time, he steals almost every scene he’s in.
Of course, Adebimpe is no newcomer to the film industry, having starred in the 2001 independent film Jump tomorrow (based on a short film completed at NYU) before his band’s first recording. He also appeared in Jonathan Demme’s 2008 award-winning film Rachel gets married (He’s the guy Rachel is going to marry!), in Spider-Man: Homecomingappeared in numerous television series, recorded voice-overs for animation, and composed music (including for the PBS series city island), and is an accomplished visual artist. (This doesn’t include selling hundreds of thousands of albums and performing at international festivals and major North American venues, although it have It’s been a while since we’ve seen TV broadcasts from the stage.
His next big project will appear on Disney+ Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Working with Jude Law, Kelly Condon and Jaleel White(!) for showrunner John Watts. hollywood reporter Connect with him via Zoom to discuss tornado filming, the future of broadcast television, his art projects and his endless gratitude when someone cares about his work.
I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, but you will see the biggest laugh in the whole show. tornado. Did you get a chance to see the film with an audience?
Yes, I attended the premiere. It’s funny because you’ve said that line so many times and you know where it’s going to lead, and then you have that moment that gets tons of laughs. You’re like “Oh, yeah. That’s funny. Everything is going great.”
It’s a great moment because it’s so ingrained in your character, and I say that with respect and love – “Weather Boy.” Are you interested in real-life weather?
I do like storms. I love witnessing the splendor of nature. It’s nice to feel small. However, before participating in this event, I was not a weather expert, but I did meet what I call a “weather wizard” at NOAA [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration].
We take a look at what tornado season will look like in Oklahoma. I met a guy named Kevin Kelleher [of the National Severe Storms Laboratory], I have him on my phone now, and another guy named Sean Waugh… Well, I have several major storm trackers and climate scientists on my speed dial who have been very helpful to me. I can now talk about the wind shear and the intensity of the tornado.
Have you ever seen a tornado in your journey of life?
No, but in Oklahoma City, production was paused a few times due to severe thunderstorms. I definitely hope there are some brave souls out there shooting behind-the-scenes footage to save on the special effects. I flew here with Glen Powell, and when we landed in Oklahoma City, we looked out and saw lightning everywhere, and we both stared at each other and thought, “Uh, is this okay? ? Can we succeed?
But everyone in Oklahoma City — from Uber drivers to hotel workers — is a storm fanatic. Meteorologists are rock stars.
The movie does a great job of showing how destructive storms can be to people and, “Hey, this is a really fun summer blockbuster.” A lot of that comes from the cast.
That’s Isaac Chung. Coming from the independent film world, he works with emotion and a focus on things that are down to earth and real. He’s very talented at it and he’s playing with this giant toy box where he can have ILM [Industrial Light and Magic] Create a tornado that wipes a city off the map. It’s great to see him weave this together.
It was definitely a risky move for the studio. to pain It’s exciting, but there’s not much in it that makes you think of action-adventure sequences and special effects. It’s a win for smaller filmmakers who want to make bigger movies.
I think so. I think of Jon Watts – I’ve known him for many years before he wrote Spider-Man. He made a TV appearance with the “Wolf Like Me” video on radio, and then had a few smaller projects play at the Sundance Film Festival. When I had lunch with him, he said, “Yes, I’m going to Spider-Man,” I remember thinking, “How is that possible? anyone let you do Spider-Man? Then, he did it!
It’s great to have someone from that perspective. Isaac grew up loving blockbusters, but he still had his own personal style and feel for people. It’s a great combination to make a grounded human story mixed with horrific disaster.
You’ve been in a lot of movies, big tours and festivals, but this is easily the biggest production you’ve ever been a part of. At this point in your career, what are your observations about such an expensive shoot?
At least for me, the setup of the main effects in the storm was done at the end of the shoot. The rest of the time we spent the rest of the day wandering around the vast fields and driving down dirt roads as a group. So, in a way, this feels like a very small movie; like a series of short films. This huge section was later filled in, at least for me.
Now, that said, I’m a huge animation and movie fan, so I regularly go to Prairie Surf Studios and visit the special effects room. That’s when you realize, “Oh, the hangar is full of props,” and then you start to understand the scale.
One really feels the camaraderie with the storm chasers.
We had a lot of downtime in Oklahoma City. There was a multiplex near Bricktown and the actors saw what happened. new indiana jones The movie had just come out and Glenn was very excited about it. Some of the actors – I don’t think Daisy [Edgar-Jones] or katie [O’Brien] once saw one indiana jones Movie. It was an “Oh, I’m old!” moment. So we all went to see the new one and, you know, it was a lot different than the others.
We all walked out of the theater and people who had never been to the theater before were like, “Wait, so, Indiana Jones was always a time traveler? Is he an archaeologist who travels through time? We were trying to explain who Indiana Jones was over dinner. They were like, “Is he like Doctor Who with a bullwhip and a hat? What?” yes he?
We also had a night where everyone went dancing. That night I sat and watched.
We had a long break because of the strike. We were due to finish in July but the strike happened so we had to come back in December. Going from 110 degree weather to 28 degree weather and still wearing shorts in the water. But it was cool, we visited a lot of Christmas wonderlands and flea markets and went ice skating.
Who has the best figure skating moves in the company?
Anthony Ramos. He is a very soft and harmonious person.
Well, I’ve been tap dancing around a big question. The broadcast last aired in March 2019 at Madison Square Garden.
Absolutely.
It’s already 2024.
Indeed.
As you know, the group has The following things. There are also many people who can’t wait to spend a few dollars to watch live TV broadcasts from radio stations. Is there any possibility of this happening?
Okay, first off: the way I do it on Instagram is with a sticky note. Then I ran into the Instagram burning hut, I hung it on the wall, and I left. I didn’t enjoy being there, but I understood it was necessary. Regardless, Instagram will be the place to post any news.
However, I can say I just finished my own record. This will come… in the future. And you… I can say… you might have the opportunity to buy tickets to something related to this, or something related to broadcast television… over a period of time.
This will make a lot of people happy.
I am glad to hear this news. I’m a hermit. So I’m always happy to hear that someone cares about what I do or what the band does.
Phish covered one of your songs, “Golden Age.” they made a long, stuck versionand them do a lot. Did you know they were going to do this before it happened?
No! We were putting on a show and people kept telling us, but I don’t think it really got people’s attention. Like “Phish is playing your song” didn’t make sense to me at first, but, look, when you put something out into the world, you don’t know how it’s going to resonate and you don’t know How it will come back to you. Band covers are always cool – and fun for me. I mean, look, I’m in my 40s and I can’t change my perspective. It’s still weird to me that someone listens to my stuff. Someone recently told me that Third Eye Blind did “Wolf Like Me” and it was awesome. In another part of my life, I might have thought, “Okay, what is That sounds like? But honestly, it’s cool.
I was at a phishing show when they came out with “Golden Age” and everyone went crazy.
Did they do it in the Sphere?
them did do it in sphere!
Oh wow, maybe this is where we enter the sphere!
For me, watching The Sphere Radio is a natural thing.
Let everyone know! Let’s play with spheres!
complete! That’s the title. Earlier today I mentioned to a friend that I wanted to talk to you and she said without hesitation, “Best Letterman appearance ever.” Just a reflex. When you made the film in 2006, did you know immediately that you had succeeded?
On stage, I think my mind went blank. Dave tells you that this is one of those “use the force” moments. You just take off your mask and you’re good to go. We went to the Zebulon bar near the studio in Brooklyn that night to watch the film, and I remember thinking, “Hey, we did it.” It was a little clunky in places, but that’s what it was supposed to be, a little punk rock. However, the next day, Kip [Malone] I’m on the subway everyone Staring at us. We walked out into the street, again, everyone Staring at us. Everyone was so complimentary, but it was weird, it immediately reminded us, “Oh, we’re on TV! We’re everywhere.”
You just said “use the force”, you may not be able to say much, but I know you’re Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
I don’t know what I can say, but I’m in this show, in this whole series, which is coming out at the end of this year. But I guess I can’t say who I am. I feel like Lucasfilm can still remove anything from anywhere. But now that it’s finished, that’s how I met Isaac, he directed an episode. Jon Watts was the creator of Christopher Ford and they brought me in.
You know, I’m still under review. They didn’t just label me.
Would you wear a cool cape or space makeup and play with a spaceship?
Everything is there.
But I spent a lot of time working on special effects because I’m a production junkie. I had these tough questions, and Watts pointed to this unassuming guy next to the monitor and said, “Talk to John Noll.”
So I spent a lot of time pestering Knoll, who, you know, pretty much invented Photoshop and made all the great special effects of all time. I hung out at the stop-motion animation studio and Phil Tippett’s place. I try to keep it together while I still have my work to do. I haven’t seen it all yet, but if I were my 10-year-old self, I’d be ready to see it The Empire Strikes Back, my brain is going to explode. I think people will enjoy it, it’s very old school filmmaking.
You mentioned that you are restricted on Instagram, but you know Star Wars There is a small minority of fans who can be a bit combative.
I am ready. I’m ready to defend, debate, joke. Because, ultimately, what are you doing? it is Star Wars. I do not understand. Getting angry about it is not the best use of your time.
