Nintendo teased some Emio-related stuff last week, and it looks like it won’t be the survival horror game we all thought it would be.
In what may be the strangest marketing campaign Nintendo has done at a hot moment, a trailer was released last week that featured a man standing in a smiling paper bag mask and nothing else. Now, a week later, Nintendo has revealed that the full game is actually called Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, which happens to be the first new game in the series in over 30 years. If you think you’ve heard of the series recently, in 2021 the original game was remastered on the Nintendo Switch, but this game is an entirely new one that brings back Yoshio Sakamoto, the designer of the NES game, as well as Super Galaxy Director of games such as “Warrior”.

“This is the first new Famicom Detective Club game in 30 years, so I did everything from the plot to the script to the cutscenes and even all the smaller details,” Sakamoto explained. “Emio – The Smiling Man is an urban legend we made up in this game about a man who appears to crying girls and trades their lives for their lives by giving them a paper bag with a smile on it.”

In the game, you play as an assistant private detective investigating a case involving a student who was murdered by Emio. “Is it the resurgence of the serial killer, or is it the work of copycats? Are these crimes inspired by the story of “The Smiling Man”, or is it its origin?” The official description of the game explains. While the game is a new story, the protagonists from the first game in the series, The Missing Heir, will return as playable characters in certain parts of the game.
It’s also coming out soon, as the game’s release date is August 29th, so you won’t have to wait too long to crack this new case.
