Shortly after World War I, in Colombia, an old man fell from a ladder; before dying, he expressed his deep love for his wife. After the funeral, a man visits the widow and she angrily fires him. Going back more than 50 years ago, telegraph boy Florentino Ariza fell in love with Fermina Daza, the daughter of a mule trader.
