Madonna’s biopic is back in production nearly a year and a half after news of a production hiatus.
The film, which follows the singer’s decades-long career, was originally to be produced by Universal Pictures, but plans fell through in January 2023.
In a new post on Instagram, Madonna shared a collection of photos of herself working on a typewriter, surrounded by a pile of papers. In one of the shots, a potential title— who is that girla nod to her 1987 song and film of the same name – appears on the first page of what looks like a script.
Another script was “rewritten by Madonna and ECW,” seemingly referring to secretary writer Erin Cressida Wilson, was brought into the program after Diablo Cody had to exit the program. Amy Pascal was originally a producer on the film.
“I need a lot of Bandz to make this…okay,” she captioned the post. “(The story of my life.)”
One source revealed that when the project closed hollywood reporter With movies, development was always a struggle, with many drafts of the script always exceeding 180 pages. There was talk of splitting the film into two parts or making it a miniseries, but that never came to fruition.
“You’ve had 40 years of success and it’s hard to fit that into one movie,” the source said at the time.
Madonna will direct the biopic. After a lengthy audition process that saw stars including Florence Pugh, Odessa Young and Alexa Demie vying for the lead role, Julia Julia Garner is the frontrunner to play the legendary artist. These hopefuls participated in intense, sometimes 11-hour choreography sessions with Madonna’s choreographer and the artist herself.
At this time, it is unclear whether Universal Pictures is still involved in the project.
