Growing up, the only computer I had access to was an ancient Dell that my dad used for work and softball schedules, and it only really (barely) ran The Sims 2. My parents were athletes and couldn’t understand how anyone could spend thousands of dollars on a computer, so it wasn’t until I started a career in gaming journalism that I was able to test out a powerful, impressive, glowing gaming PC that was even that , I can only have them for a few months at most. PC gaming is growing faster than console gamingso I was somewhat determined to evolve into a PC gamer (who would probably still use a controller since my little hands had a hard time handling mouse and keyboard input), and my journey was an arduous one.
There are two main types of gaming PCs: pre-installed and custom. Pre-Built is exactly what the label says: they’re fully built PC towers, equipped with all the features you need to enjoy gaming, and basically ready to be plugged in and used straight out of the box. A custom build requires you to source key internal components yourself, from the graphics card to the processor to the cooling system. They allow for more fine-tuning and customization than pre-builds, but they inherently require a level of technical prowess that can be quite daunting.

The Trials and Tribulations of Computer Gaming
months ago, purchasing power I was sent a pre-built PC for testing/review that required me to install a graphics card in it ( GeForce RTX 4070). I followed the instructions, lying prone on the floor of my apartment, unscrewing the brackets that held it in place, desperately trying to keep my cat away from all the little screws and delicate parts. Before trying this process, I watched a YouTube tutorial, worried that my clumsy fingers would break the delicate (and crucial) plastic tabs. When I put the graphics card into the tower, I heard the click of it plugging into the PCie (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) port, connecting the internal power cord, turning off all backups, plugging in all the peripherals and HDMI cables, and then putting the A beast was thrown under my table.
However, when I turn it on, my monitor says there is no signal. I tried other cables. I uninstalled and reinstalled the GPU. there is nothing. I thought maybe a monitor that had been dormant for nearly a year was the culprit, so I dragged it into the living room to check if it would display my Xbox Series S. try. No luck.
To their credit, the iBUYPOWER reps were friendly and responsive and tried their best to help me get my old computer back and my new one shipped, although it took a few months to get it all sorted, during which time I cleaned up Free up space to clean out the dust accumulated on your gaming computer. I thought the problem was user error, which reminded me that I was far from competent in the world of computer gaming – until a second computer showed up with the same problem. To resolve this issue, I put out a call for help on social media, and dozens of knowledgeable PC gamers reached out to me. One person walked me through every step of installing the card again and I sent them videos and pictures to make sure I actually completed the installation correctly.
then, after it still Not working, the person who helped me pointed out that this particular rig has a Hite riser cable connector, which is just for aesthetics as it allows you to mount the graphics card upright. They suggested that I unplug the Hyte adapter cable and plug the side of the GPU into another PCie port to see if it was a cable issue and not my GPU installation. So I opened the damn thing again and started touching it, my hands shaking, trying to make sure nothing broke in the process. After successfully unplugging the riser cable, I discovered that the “thin” layout of the case meant that the graphics card couldn’t be installed in any other slot. Frustrated, frustrated, and sweating profusely, I packed the computer and prepared to send it back again. I thanked iBUYPOWER for their time and energy and gave up on my dream of computer games.
A breakthrough in PC gaming
A generous internet friend who lives near me saw me tweeting about my computer issues and offered to let me borrow their old tower, telling me when I came to pick it up that all I needed to do was Download Windows onto it. As I stood there, sweating profusely on the sidewalk, I realized I’d created a new problem for myself: Downloading Windows to a wiped PC required me to download a version of the operating system to a USB drive that I could then Plugged into the tower, and the only functioning computer in my house was a MacBook Air without a USB port.
Still, I hauled the tower back to my apartment, where I sat on the floor for about half an hour, dissociating, until I had a eureka moment: the iBUYPOWER’s motherboard display port would at least let me use the PC to download Windows onto the pen drive. So, I opened the box of the damn thing again, scolded my cat for immediately jumping into the box, and then placed it in my living room. After a few hours of asking my PC builder friend a few questions (where do I download Windows, what exactly is Rufus, which boot device should I choose), I had Windows running on my friend’s PC.
Then, after all this work, all the sweat and frustration, NZXT sent me their own pre-installed PC that already had the graphics card installed (I told them about my installation issues and how I gave up trying anything some kind of custom work). Absolutely beautiful in an almost mind-numbingly hilarious way(Player: Sansuwhich will cost you $3,700 and looks like a gorgeous technical fish tank when it opens, starts up without any issues.
It took me less than 20 minutes to get this behemoth out of its shipping box and set everything up, then I collapsed on the bed and let out the maniacal laugh of a horror movie villain. Hours of struggle, months of waiting, and this beautiful thing turned on like a light switch. Guys, I think this is pre-built or nothing for me.
